When you're in Houston and looking for a Mexican restaurant, what makes Alamo Tamales a top choice? The answer lies in its unique combination of tradition, variety, and convenience. The most obvious reason is the tamales. As the name suggests, this is what they do best. They offer both handmade and machine-made tamales in a wide range of flavors, including pork, chicken, beef, cheese & jalapeño, and bean. While one customer noted that the tamales were not "the best" for their personal taste, it's clear they are a popular item, and the variety allows everyone to find a flavor they enjoy. The handmade pork tamale, in particular, is a fan favorite.
Beyond the tamales, the menu is a treasure trove of other Mexican staples. For breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you can find a variety of offerings that satisfy any craving, from breakfast tacos to lunch plates like Carne Guisada and Pork Stew in Guajillo Sauce. The bakery is also a significant draw, providing a selection of sweet bread, desserts, and pastries that make for a perfect end to a meal or a quick grab-and-go treat.
While one review mentioned concerns about the pricing and portion size of a Menudo dish, it's important to consider that pricing can vary and is often a reflection of ingredient quality and overhead. The Menudo is specifically noted as a weekend-only item, and as with many local specialty dishes, preparation can be labor-intensive. The other review highlights the friendly staff and nice atmosphere, suggesting that the overall experience is positive despite personal preferences on food seasoning. The restaurant's popularity, which can lead to a wait during busy times, is a strong indicator of its high demand and quality. The fact that it has been in business since 1960 speaks volumes about its enduring appeal and ability to consistently deliver a product that keeps customers coming back.
In conclusion, Alamo Tamales is worth choosing for its authentic, family-recipe-based cuisine, its commitment to fast and convenient service, and its status as a historical and beloved local business. It's a place where you can experience a slice of Houston's culinary heritage, whether you're dining in, getting a quick meal through the drive-thru, or catering a major event.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The quality of the food is satisfactory; however, the pricing appears excessive. I ordered a menudo, Chico, and found the portion considerably smaller than expected. The grande size did not align with the larger portions I am accustomed to. In conclusion, it seems that the establishment prioritizes profit over value. Some alternative venues provide comparable or superior cuisine at much more reasonable prices.
May 18 · NGAVI 13Have tried only tamales here so far and they are not the best but we like them. My wife thinks tamales we have had in Houston were small-ish and dough was overly seasoned for her taste. Friendly staffers. Nice atmosphere. It is sort of cafeteria-style; want to try more of their offerings like tacos or empanadas. They have a bakery, too; it would be nice if more of the bakery foods were labelled, or maybe we just need to learn more about those offerings, ha.
April 06 · Derek GanttEverything is always delicious here. Been coming here for years - the prices have gone up as they got more popular but still worth it. The tamales are some of the best in town. Breakfast on the weekend is usually packed but it’s a large place so seats open up decently quick.
April 13 · Stefanie Gonzalez QuinteroUsually the food here was fantastic, but I feel like in the last couple of trips it seems like the qualities getting worse and worse. I just went there today and I ordered two dozen I get home and they’re completely dried out. The meat is dried out or it’s old so I drove over 45 minutes to go pick this up and this is what I have to throw in the trash. It kind of upsets me because I have really fond memories of how good the food is here but it seems like it’s starting to go downhill. I take no pleasure in making reviews like this either, but I am highly disappointed on the amount of money that I pay versus what I get.
February 27 · King DavidCame here on Thursday morning and the barbacoa tastes nasty and had a lot oil dripping. Called them and the manager wanted me to bring it back so she can inspect it first and determine if I can get my money back. For them to be busy on the weekends they should refund then money back for their mistake.
