Located off of Patton street a little bit north of downtown Houston is Gerardo’s. S/o to the home @richotoole for tweeting this place out bc it sure caught my attention. Parking is a dirt lot with everyone taking the mamalona out after church so good luck lol.We figured out the parking and walk in to the joint. It looks like an old warehouse and there’s some seating and an empty cooler with drinks. We get in line and it’s your classic weekend crowd (this place is open Fri Sat Sun). You got the old folk, the young (clearly hungover people) and the people in church clothes. We finally get to order and I don’t know if they speak English. Granted it’s been open since 1977 but why ever bother in English cuando se habla español.You can order by the taco or do it traditional Mexican style and order by the pound and you put it in the middle of the table. I would’ve done that but since I’ve never been here and I wasn’t sure what Bae wanted I just did tacos.Barbacoa Taco 8/10 - everything you’re looking for here. That tenderness, shreds easily, cheek meat.Cabeza Taco 8.4/10 - I always tell people that cow head tacos are the creme de la creme. If you see it, order it. This is banging.I understand why this has been open since 1977. This is Mexico in Houston and if you want some real food swing by. This isn’t a chips and salsa place. There isn’t “fajitas”. Gerardo's Introduce

Welcome to Gerardo's, a true gem of Houston's culinary scene. Tucked away on Patton Street, just north of downtown, this isn't your typical Tex-Mex spot with complimentary chips and salsa. Instead, Gerardo's offers a genuine taste of Mexico right here in the heart of Texas. Since 1977, this family-owned establishment has been serving up some of the most authentic and beloved Mexican dishes, drawing in generations of customers who crave a true, no-frills experience. From the moment you arrive, you'll feel like you've stumbled upon a local secret, a place where tradition and flavor are the top priorities. The atmosphere is casual, cozy, and historic, reflecting the restaurant’s long-standing place in the community. It’s a place where you'll find a diverse crowd—from church-goers grabbing a post-service meal to hungover millennials and tourists in search of an authentic culinary adventure. The focus is squarely on the food, particularly the succulent barbacoa and cabeza, which many locals consider to be the best in all of Houston. Whether you're a long-time resident or just passing through, a visit to Gerardo's offers a unique and unforgettable taste of real Mexican food culture.

Gerardo's is conveniently located at 609 Patton St, Houston, TX 77009, USA. Situated in the Northside neighborhood, it’s easily accessible from downtown and surrounding areas. Parking is available, though it can be a bit of a challenge, especially on busy weekend mornings. There is a free parking lot on-site, which, as some patrons have noted, can get quite full, feeling like a vibrant, bustling scene. Free street parking is also an option if the lot is packed. The restaurant's accessibility features make it a welcoming spot for everyone. This includes a wheelchair-accessible entrance, parking lot, restroom, and seating, ensuring a comfortable experience for all guests. Its location near downtown makes it a great spot for a quick bite or a relaxed meal before or after exploring the city.

Gerardo's is well-known for its simple yet powerful menu and its dedication to authentic flavors. The services offered are focused on providing high-quality, traditional meals.

  • Dine-in: Enjoy your meal in the historic and casual setting of the restaurant itself. The interior has a warehouse-like charm, with ample seating for individuals and groups.

  • Takeout: Perfect for those on the go, you can order your favorite dishes to take home. This is a popular option, especially for the weekend crowds.

  • Diverse Menu: While the menu may not have the extensive options of a typical Tex-Mex spot, it excels in its specialty. You can order by the taco or, for a more traditional experience, by the pound, which is ideal for sharing with a group. Offerings include authentic Mexican fare like barbacoa, cabeza, and a variety of small plates.

  • Breakfast and Lunch: Gerardo's is a popular spot for both breakfast and lunch. Many of its offerings, such as breakfast tacos and comfort food, are perfect for starting your day or for a midday meal.

Gerardo's stands out for several reasons that make it a local favorite and a must-visit destination for anyone seeking authentic Mexican food.

  • Fast Service: Despite the bustling crowds, especially on weekends, the service is known to be quick and efficient. You’ll get your food in a timely manner, allowing you to enjoy your meal without a long wait.

  • Authentic Flavors: This is arguably the biggest draw. Gerardo’s serves real, traditional Mexican dishes. Customers rave about the authenticity of the barbacoa and cabeza, noting the tenderness and rich flavor of the meat. Many consider it to be "Mexico in Houston," offering a genuine culinary experience that can't be replicated at many other restaurants.

  • Cozy and Historic Atmosphere: The restaurant has been open since 1977 and its history is palpable. The building itself has a rustic, old-world charm that makes dining there feel like a special, timeless experience. It’s a place that welcomes a mix of crowds, from solo diners to large groups and families with children.

  • Local Speciality: The star of the show is the barbacoa and cabeza. These dishes are prepared with a focus on traditional methods, ensuring a high-quality product that is both tender and packed with flavor. The barbacoa is described as everything you're looking for, with easily shredded, tender cheek meat, while the cabeza is a “banging” dish that should always be ordered if you see it.

  • Welcoming Environment: The owner is often present and is known for being a wonderful, kind woman who greets every customer with a warm welcome. This personal touch adds to the cozy and inviting atmosphere, making you feel right at home.
