Au Cheval NYC is worth choosing for a multitude of reasons that collectively make it a top-tier dining experience in New York City. The primary and most compelling reason is its legendary food. The **double cheeseburger** alone is a culinary pilgrimage for many, and it consistently lives up to its reputation as one of the best burgers you will ever have. However, to choose Au Cheval solely for the burger would be a mistake. The menu is full of other standout dishes that are just as impressive. The **French dip sandwich** and **General Jane’s honey-fried chicken** are both excellent, and as noted by a real customer, the sides and salads are truly the "stars of the show." The **chopped wedge salad**, in particular, has been called one of the truly great salads in all of New York City. The dessert menu, featuring the rich and creamy **chocolate cream pie**, provides a perfect finish to the meal. Beyond the food, the atmosphere and service are significant factors. The restaurant manages to be both trendy and cozy, making it suitable for a variety of dining occasions. Despite its popularity, the service is known for being fast and incredibly professional, with staff like Caesar, the burger master, receiving personal commendation for their skill and hospitality. The presence of a bar with a fantastic cocktail menu, as well as an extensive list of beers and spirits, means that even if you're not a "burger guy," you can still enjoy a great meal with a perfect drink pairing. The fact that the restaurant is **family-friendly** and provides a **transgender safe space** highlights its commitment to inclusivity, creating a welcoming environment for everyone. While there can be a wait, the ability to make reservations is a huge plus, and the experience is well worth the planning. In a city saturated with dining options, Au Cheval stands out not just for one dish, but for its consistent quality, exceptional service, and all-around fantastic dining experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This place is as good as its reputation. I did not have the burger. Not really a burger guyMy friends had it and liked it. But to me a burger isn't that exciting. Had the French dip which was very good. The stars of the show were the salad and sides. The chopped wedge was amazing. One of the truly great salads in nyc. The Mac and cheese and broccoli sides were top notch. The chocolate pie was delicious as was an off menu raspberry sorbet. Our server was as good as you can expect. Truly lovely and helpful. I will definitely return here.
July 27 · Michael LehrmanI've been waiting about 2 years to come here and try this burger! Finally took my girlfriend to NYC and we came in without a reservation. I asked for a bar seat and was immediately seated. Got lucky because there were only 4 seats left! We each ordered the double cheeseburger but I had the bacon and egg add one! This burger is rated one of the best in the country so when they opened a location in nyc (originally Chicago),I had to go! Let me tell you it did not disappoint! It was literally the best burger I've ever had! Thanks to Caesar, who cooked my burger for doing an incredible job and making the trip so worth every penny as it was the most expensive burger meal I've ever had! He is a master of his craft and his hospitality was second to none! I highly recommend this place and try this burger!
August 24 · Chip CarlsonFood was amazing! Well paced out and our waitor was great. Food tasted delicious. Firstly, the root beer. Secondly, that cobb salad! The steak, bronzini, fries and broccoli. A little tight on seating because of how packed it was, but Speaks for the place being quality.
July 17 · Sam NehmeI was really craving a burger, and dining at Au Cheval was exactly what I needed. We ordered two double cheeseburgers (one with an egg on top), fries, and asparagus. Everything was absolutely delicious. The only downside was the bun—it was a bit dry, and we noticed other guests left part of theirs too. A better bun would’ve made the experience perfect.
August 06 · Roberta MastrandreaI was so excited to celebrate my birthday, after waiting for this reservation for about two weeks I finally got in! I grabbed my friends and we had some amazing cocktails and appetizers! The general chicken was the best I’ve ever had! And we got two wedge salads that we shared between the three of us, one with chicken wow absolutely incredible! I had to try the $40 old-fashioned called the old Tokyo it was rather sweet… I preferred the dirty martini but overall an amazing birthday dinner! They even brought me out a Sundae
