The counter-service model ensures that you get your food quickly, allowing you to enjoy your meal without a long wait.
Barra Payan is renowned for specific menu items and aspects that have earned it a loyal following.
- Sandwiches: The core of the menu is their extensive selection of sandwiches, known for their generous fillings and fresh bread. Favorites include the "Completo" sandwiches, with combinations of chicken and pork leg, and the classic "Pierna" (pork leg) and "Jamon" (ham) sandwiches, often paired with various cheeses like Gouda or Mozzarella. The "Salami, Huevos Y Queso" sandwich is also a crowd-pleaser.
- Pica Pollo (Fried Chicken): This is arguably one of the most famous items on the menu. The fried chicken is known for its crispy skin and juicy, flavorful meat. It's available in various portion sizes, from a two-piece snack to a seven-piece feast. The Pica Pollo Lunch Special is a particularly popular and affordable option.
- Fresh Fruit Juices (Batidos): A defining feature of Barra Payan is its selection of freshly made juices and smoothies, or "batidos." You can find classic flavors like pineapple (Piña), papaya (Lechosa), and passion fruit (Chinola). These refreshing drinks are the perfect complement to the rich and savory food.
- Authentic Dominican Flavors: The restaurant's primary highlight is its unwavering commitment to authentic Dominican cuisine. The flavors are bold and true to tradition, providing a genuine culinary experience that transports you directly to the Caribbean.
The menu also includes other delicious options like Chofan (a type of fried rice) and classic sides such as Tostones (fried plantains) and Papas Fritas (French fries). Desserts like Bizcocho and 3 Leches are also available for those with a sweet tooth.

Barra Payan offers an experience that is well worth seeking out, especially for those who appreciate authenticity and a focus on simple, well-executed food. The restaurant is not about fine dining or extensive customer service; it's about the food itself. This is a place for a specific type of diner—one who is willing to look past a no-frills environment for the sake of exceptional flavor.
The sandwiches, particularly the “Pierna con queso Gouda,” have been praised for being "soft, crunchy and juicy," a combination that showcases the quality of the ingredients. The Pica Pollo is often highlighted as a must-try, with many considering it among the best fried chicken in the city. The fresh juices, especially the "Chinola" (passion fruit), are also a major draw and provide a perfect balance to the rich, savory main dishes.
It is important to note that the experience at Barra Payan can be very direct. Many of the staff speak Spanish as their primary language, which can be an advantage for Spanish speakers and an opportunity for others to practice. However, some reviews suggest that the lack of English proficiency among some staff and the fast-paced, sometimes impersonal, counter service can be a point of friction for some first-time visitors. The key is to be prepared for a quick, bustling, and transaction-focused interaction.
Despite some of the challenges, the consensus among loyal patrons is clear: the food is phenomenal. If you are a fan of authentic Dominican cuisine and are looking for a place where flavor and tradition are the top priorities, Barra Payan is a destination you should definitely add to your list. It’s a place that proves that a great meal doesn't need to come with a lot of fanfare. You'll leave full and with a genuine appreciation for the flavors of the Caribbean.
In conclusion, for those who value incredible, authentic food above all else, Barra Payan is a true New York gem.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1It was a first time, after reading reviews I was expecting bad Custumer service but overall everyone was very attentive, the cashier was very helpful, the menu is also paste on the counter. The sandwich “pierna con queso Gouda” was soft, crunchy and juicy, so good. The chinola juice is perfect and the fried chicken to be honest is better than the one sold at equis picapollo. 🥱Knowing Spanish does give you an advantage when you’re gonna order fried chicken (specific pieces) because most of the staff don’t know english so maybe go with the pieces of chicken that you want translated to Spanish on a piece of paper. The guys serving the food are trying their best, so make sure if you don’t know Spanish so you can get the exact pieces you want. Also I strongly advise them to at least have one person that can speak English serving. If you love fried chicken or pica pollo this is your place.I left full and with a smile on my face.
August 16 · Ashley H MThis was the worst experience I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The first time I walked in, I had no idea how to order—no one greeted me, asked if I needed help, or even acknowledged I was there. I felt completely ignored, so I left.I gave them a second chance a couple of weeks later and had the exact same experience. There were no menus posted, and when I paid for my food, no one explained how or where I would receive it.It’s not just me—my mother, my aunt, and my mother-in-law (who is Dominican and speaks Spanish) all received the same dismissive service. This is not a language barrier issue—it’s a customer service issue. They are, without a doubt, the worst. Neither I nor my family and friends will ever go back.
August 13 · Jada LewisThe food was great but service is very unprofessional. I waited at lease 5 minuets before I was even notice. No one spoke english I had to point to whst I wanted on the menu.
June 09 · Robert “Jedirob” BarrettFood is great but service is terrible , everyone is always distracted and they are super slow to get things done here love the food but they need to focus more on customer's satisfaction
August 14 · Cav DazThe food is great. But the service is horrible. Attend costumers very slow
