While some reviews are mixed, there are several dishes at Bessou that consistently receive high praise from customers. The menu is built around unique and creative takes on Japanese classics.
One of the most popular and highly-praised items is the Crispy Rice. This dish features a deep-fried rice cake that is crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, topped with various ingredients. The Crispy Rice Trio is a great way to sample different toppings, such as spicy tuna, scallop ceviche, and salmon. Customers love how the crispy texture of the rice contrasts with the fresh seafood and flavorful sauces.
Another standout item is the Original Chicken Karaage. This Japanese fried chicken is celebrated for its perfect crunch on the outside and tender, juicy meat on the inside. It’s a classic comfort food that Bessou executes exceptionally well. For a more adventurous take, the Hot Honey Nanban Chicken, a spin on a traditional Japanese dish with a sweet and spicy kick, is a must-try.
For a heartier meal, Bessou offers a variety of Sandos, which are Japanese-style sandwiches on milk bread. The Original Chicken Sandwich and the Hot Honey Nanban Chicken Sando are great options, praised for their flavorful fillings and soft, delicious buns. The Sushi Rice Bowl (Chirashi) is another popular choice, offering a medley of fresh sushi toppings over perfectly seasoned rice.
Don't forget to try the sides and snacks. The Nori Fries are a favorite, with a savory, umami flavor from the seaweed. The Corn Ribs and Housemade Pickles are also great for sharing. Bessou's retail items, such as the Furikake and Chili Oil, are also worth considering, as they allow you to take the restaurant's flavors home and add them to your own cooking.
While some reviewers have had varied experiences, the positive feedback on specific dishes points to a menu with some true gems. The best way to experience Bessou is to focus on these popular items and enjoy the casual, trendy atmosphere of the Pier 57 Market. It's a great spot for a quick, delicious, and unique meal that feels both like a modern New York experience and a taste of home.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Well, what can I say? We came here for a quick bite — my mom went for a small snack: a deep-fried rice triangle with shrimp. Unfortunately, it didn’t impress. The flavor was bland, and the portion tiny for what it cost.My burger wasn’t much better. Edible, sure — but completely forgettable. No finesse, no standout elements, just something to fill the stomach.Given that this is part of a food court with plenty of other options, it’s hard to justify coming back. The whole thing had a bit too much of that tourist-trap vibe. You’re better off looking one stall further.
May 03 · Sven OliverTheir foods surpassed my expectations. I expected fast food-grade quality, such as salty, greasy fried foods. No! They were actually, legitimately delicious. The fried rice was crispy and the scallops and shrimps on top with sauce amazingly enhanced each other’s flavor. The chicken karaage was crispy outside and tender inside, and moderately salty. I enjoyed dining near the water. The registrar was kind
March 16 · JAEIN SEONot the Bessou I RememberI used to love going to Bessou back in the day, so when I came across this location inside the market, I was excited to give it a try. I ordered my go-to dish — the karaage — along with a sushi rice bowl, but spending nearly $80 here turned out to be a huge mistake. The karaage was incredibly disappointing. It was overcooked, almost burnt, and so dry and hard that it completely lacked the juicy tenderness karaage is known for.The sushi rice bowl was even worse. It was loaded with daikon and pickled vegetables, with hardly any sashimi to speak of. What little sashimi there was tasted off — not fresh, with both the temperature and flavor being completely wrong. To top it off, they used smoked salmon instead of sashimi salmon, which made no sense and felt lazy for a dish like this. And the rice? Soggy and stale. It was honestly inedible. At that point, I would’ve been happier with a $15 poke bowl somewhere else. It’s such a letdown to see how far the quality has fallen. Bessou used to be a place I truly loved, but this experience left me frustrated and disappointed. It’s disappointing to see a place I once loved lose what made it special.
December 16 · Jihyun LeeUpdated review : 5 stars I was very pleased the fresh buns are back + the original recipe for the chicken sando as well ! Thanks for listening to your loyal customers . I had the Bessou chicken club, and it was as it should be absolutely magnificent !!Old Review: What happened? Last year, my fav hot Honey Nanban chicken go to lunch sando used to have a fresh bun (see pic). It was so jam-packed with flavorful ingredients. I've been back only to find the chicken flavor profile has gone downhill, and a packaged, processed martins bun was replacing the fresh bun ..ugh! Bring back the original recipe, please! Review for Market 57 takeaway location
August 02 · GroomingroomHi! Today I decided to try this place out as the line was long and was intrigued by the “Japanese comfort food” branding. I ordered the Japanese fried chicken with fries and spicy mayo. The spicy mayo was amazing but the chicken was very mushy and extremely sweetened. I also ordered a side of fries and found 3 pieces of brown hair!! I knew for sure it wasn’t mine as I have black hair! Overall I was disappointed and dissatisfied by the food
