For my taste, I am big on sauce and texture. The rolls for me are too soft and squishy, and they did not give enough sauce. Fortunately enough, I had brought my own. I got a dried shrimp and egg, it was OVERALL OK, nothing special. With the added sauce, made everything better. Price wise, this place was the most affordable and you can choose between small and large. A small would have been just fine for me. - Sapphira Bella

Cheong Fun Cart Introduce

In the vibrant and ever-evolving culinary landscape of New York City's Chinatown, some of the most cherished spots are not fancy restaurants but humble, dedicated street vendors. The **Cheong Fun Cart** is a prime example of this. Located on Hester Street, this iconic food cart has become a local institution, serving up a classic Cantonese dish known as **Cheong Fun**, or steamed rice rolls. The cart operates with remarkable efficiency, with a small team of "absolute queens" who expertly churn out fresh, made-to-order rice rolls for a steady stream of customers.

This spot is all about simplicity and authenticity. The menu is focused, offering a variety of fillings and a choice between a small or large portion, making it easy to decide. The rice rolls themselves are noted for their solid, chewy texture, a key quality that sets them apart from the competition. While some may prefer a different texture, many find these to be a truly satisfying and authentic rendition of the classic dish. What it lacks in intricate variety, it more than makes up for in value, speed, and genuine charm.

The Cheong Fun Cart is a quintessential New York experience for both locals and tourists seeking a quick, delicious, and incredibly affordable meal. It is a perfect spot for those who appreciate comfort food and want a true taste of a Chinatown staple, prepared with the care and tradition that only a dedicated vendor can provide.

Location and Accessibility

The Cheong Fun Cart is located at **159 Hester St, New York, NY 10013**, right in front of the Hong Kong Supermarket. This strategic position makes it a convenient and easily recognizable destination for anyone navigating Chinatown.

Accessibility to the area is excellent via public transportation. Several subway lines are within a short walking distance, including the **B, D, J, N, Q, R, W,** and **Z** trains. Since the cart operates on the sidewalk, there is no indoor seating. This means it is a dedicated takeaway spot, but there are plenty of benches in nearby Columbus Park and other public spaces to enjoy your meal. It is an ideal spot for a quick bite while you explore the neighborhood.

Services Offered

As a classic food cart, the service at Cheong Fun is straightforward and efficient, focusing on providing a quick and tasty meal on the go.

  • Takeaway: This is the primary service option. The entire operation is set up for quick and efficient takeaway. The food is made to order, but the process is so streamlined that wait times are minimal, even when there's a line.

  • Dine-in (Sidewalk): While there is no formal dining area, customers often eat on the benches or ledges around the cart or take their food to nearby parks. This casual dining style is part of the authentic street food experience.

  • Payment: A crucial detail for new customers is that the Cheong Fun Cart is a **cash-only** establishment. It's important to come prepared with cash to ensure a smooth and quick transaction.

  • Serving All Day: The cart is popular for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and is a great option for a solo meal or a quick bite at any time of day.

Features and Highlights

Cheong Fun Cart stands out in a crowded market for its distinct and appealing features.

  • Authentic and Freshly Made: The rice rolls are made fresh to order on the spot. This guarantees a soft, warm, and delicious product every time. The process of watching the rice rolls being made is a highlight in itself, showcasing the skilled work of the vendors.

  • Incredibly Affordable Pricing: This is one of the most compelling reasons to visit. The prices are shockingly low, with some of the most affordable food options in the city. The value for the portion size is unbeatable, making it a true "cheap eats" gem.

  • Simplicity of Offerings: The menu is simple and focused, making it easy to order. You can choose from various fillings like dried shrimp, BBQ pork, or beef, and add an egg for a richer flavor. This no-fuss approach is appreciated by regulars.

  • Generous Portions: Customers often note that the portion sizes, especially for the price, are very generous. A small size is often enough for one person, and a large portion can be a full, satisfying meal.

  • Comfort Food: The rice rolls are the ultimate comfort food. The soft, chewy texture, savory fillings, and a drizzle of sauce create a simple yet deeply satisfying meal that is beloved by locals.

What Is Worth Choosing

For a first-timer, a great choice is to start with a classic. The **Dried Shrimp and Egg** rice roll is a popular and solid option, offering a subtle crunch and a savory flavor. For a more robust taste, the **BBQ Pork** rice roll is a fantastic choice, praised by customers for its satisfying and flavorful profile. Another good choice is the beef or chicken for a hearty, savory option.

It's also highly recommended to add an egg to your order. For a small additional cost, the egg adds a richer texture and flavor that elevates the entire dish. While some reviewers have noted that the cart's standard sauce may be a bit light for their taste, the rice rolls are still flavorful on their own, and the option to add hot sauce is available. Remember to bring cash, and don't be afraid to try a new filling each time you visit. The simple elegance of the food, combined with the incredibly low price point and quick service, makes the Cheong Fun Cart a truly unmissable spot for anyone in NYC.
