Chez Josephine Introduce
In the heart of New York City's vibrant Theater District, where the bright lights of Broadway meet the bustling energy of Midtown, lies a true culinary and cultural institution: Chez Josephine. More than just a French restaurant, it is a living tribute to the legendary entertainer Josephine Baker, embodying the spirit, glamour, and joie de vivre of a bygone era. From the moment you step through its doors, you are transported to a world of red velvet, ornate decor, and a sense of history that is both captivating and profoundly romantic. It is a place where classic French cuisine is served alongside a nightly dose of live piano music, creating a dining experience that is both elegant and warmly inviting.
Chez Josephine has long been a favorite of both New Yorkers and tourists, celebrated for its unique atmosphere and dedication to French bistro fare. It's a spot that feels both timeless and perfectly suited to its location. As a pre-theater dining destination, it offers a refined and quick escape from the honky-tonk of 42nd Street, a place to gather one's thoughts and enjoy a superb meal before a show. Post-theater, it transforms into a cozy and lively late-night spot, where the music continues and the cocktails flow, offering a perfect way to cap off an evening in the city. The menu, while offering classic French dishes, also showcases a few modern interpretations, ensuring there is something to satisfy both traditionalists and those with a more adventurous palate.
The ambiance is a major draw, with its historic feel and romantic setting. It's an upscale but not stuffy environment, perfect for a special occasion or a quiet, intimate dinner. The live music, a key highlight, elevates the entire experience, giving the space a palpable energy and a sense of celebration. It is this combination of exceptional food, a curated wine list, and a truly unique atmosphere that makes Chez Josephine an iconic part of the New York dining scene. It's not just a meal; it's a performance in its own right, a delightful evening that is as memorable as the shows on Broadway.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Nice quaint french place tucked away on 8th street. The menu has some nice French items and a brasserie feel, although the live piano kicks it up a notch. The French onion soup is worth getting and anything that came from the bar was good. This spot has been here since the 1900s, check it out!
July 22 · Justin PinchbackA Delightful Evening at Chez JosephineI highly recommend Chez Josephine! It's a French restaurant that has it all. The food is fantastic, and they make some seriously tasty cocktails. The prices are also very reasonable for the quality. I especially love that they participate in events like Restaurant Week, which is a great way to experience their menu. It's a fantastic spot for a great meal and a fun atmosphere!
August 13 · alvaro zapataI was on a business trip with my colleague and arrived late to manhattan. Chez Josephine was our choice and it was a walking distance from the hotel where we were staying. The place was empty and probably because we were late for diner time - close to 10pmNice staff although I was expecting French waiters or waitresses :) I ordered the steak and my colleague ordered onion soup and tuna tartar and we both had good wine. The food was very good. My colleague decided to order desert (profiterole). It was a turn off and wished they didn’t order it. The waitress discounted the price of the desert, which was a good start. If I were her, I would have removed it altogether. She said because you ate most of it (I don’t think this is a factor). In the background a guy was playing piano and singing. It was a nice to hear some Beatles and oldies there.
June 28 · Ghassan ShamseddineI liked this restaurant — it has a great atmosphere and even live music, which adds to the experience. I ordered the French onion soup and a Niçoise salad (just a heads-up: it comes with canned tuna), and we also had the shrimp. I wouldn’t say the food was amazing — it was all very average, nothing special.
May 12 · Alina KarpovichThe overall experience was fantastic! The piano and singing, the lighting, the artwork. It’s a beautiful restaurant. Food and drinks were amazing too. Went for restaurant week and felt that it fell a little short so we just ordered off the menu. That did not disappoint. Would definitely recommend to friends.
