Fong On Introduce
In a city constantly in motion, where new food trends emerge daily, a handful of places stand as true, time-honored institutions. Fong On is one such place. While it may not be a Korean restaurant as the title might suggest, this iconic Chinese tofu shop has been a cornerstone of New York's Chinatown for decades. Originally established in 1933, this family-run business has been perfecting its craft for generations, offering locals and tourists alike a taste of authentic, handmade tofu products. Today, with a modernized space and the same commitment to quality, Fong On continues to be a go-to spot for a healthy, delicious, and deeply satisfying bite. It's a place that perfectly blends its rich history with a fresh, contemporary feel, making it a beloved part of the neighborhood's culinary fabric.
Fong On's philosophy is simple: master the basics and do them exceptionally well. The menu is focused primarily on fresh tofu, tofu pudding, rice cakes, and a few select drinks. This specialization allows them to maintain an incredibly high standard of quality. The tofu pudding, available in both sweet and savory versions, is a particular point of pride. Patrons describe it as "silky" and "smooth," a testament to the family's long-standing recipe. The ambiance is casual and welcoming, a clean and well-decorated space with limited seating, perfect for a quick stop or a satisfying solo lunch. Whether you're a long-time customer who remembers its original location on Mott Street or a newcomer discovering it for the first time, the friendly service and the quality of the food make it a memorable experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I actually really liked the savory tofu pudding. I just can’t get behind the $12 price tag for a cup of tofu and very simple toppings. It’s honestly delicious and satisfying and the perfect amount of toppings. But $12 for a cup of tofu just seems a bit crazy. It’s a very well decorated space with 2 tables inside and a space to stand and eat as well. There’s also benches outside.Cute merch.Card/credit or cash.
July 29 · Cassia AAlways the best homemade tofu, rice cakes, soy bean drinks and herbal tea. We've been coming to Fong On for years. Paul and his family are always so amazing, friendly and kind. And the staff, Stephanie, Gary and Danny are all so efficient, friendly, helpful and professional. We always have big orders when we are there. They're simply the best. Keep up the amazing work.

They are the master of tofu, and everything is so good (except the rice cakes). I got the Can’t Go Wrong Combo, and it was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. The tofu pudding was warm, soft, and rich, while the toppings were sweet and cold. It was just perfect. The soy milk is also a must-get at Fong On. The only disappointment is the rice cakes because they are just very basic. This is a place of history (est. 1933), and I will DEFINITELY come back again for their amazing tofu pudding and soy milk!
April 05 · Song Ting TangBeen here a few times, and it’s always wonderful. The first combo is perfectly filling and the brown sugar sauce not too sweet. Personally, I swap the red bean for something else because it has a bit of a drying aftertaste.Very limited outdoor seating and they package your food as if you’re taking it to go anyways. Also very limited standing room when busy. However, they are very fast, so you won’t be waiting long!
August 25 · Dio RegjajHong On’s tofu pudding lets you customize your toppings — kind of like an Asian dessert bar (think Meet Fresh style). You can add things like taro balls, red beans, coconut jelly, and more.I went with the plain tofu pudding topped with ginger syrup. 🌟 The tofu pudding itself was decent — smooth enough — and the ginger syrup added a nice kick of warmth and sweetness. They also sell white sugar cake in various flavors: original, brown sugar, matcha, ginger, and coconut.I tried a few:* * * * * ❌ Matcha — Way too sweet, not enjoyable.* * * * * ⭕️ Ginger — Not bad, but nothing special. It honestly just tasted like they used the same ginger syrup from the tofu pudding and mixed it in.* * * * * ✅ Coconut — The best of the bunch. Still on the sweet side, but the coconut aroma works really well with the texture of the sugar cake, making it sweet but not cloying.I also grabbed a bottle of their sweet soy milk. Drinking it right after the sugar cake made it taste bland, but after a little break, it suddenly felt super sweet! The soybean flavor is quite strong though — I’d give it a solid 4.0/5.0.
