★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This was my second time at Grandmom’s Home. I noticed that the bowls and chopsticks were not cleaned very well which was a bit gross. The service was a bit disappointing. The staff seemed unorganized and did not refill our waters or check in to ask how the food was. When we asked for the check, they did not bring us a receipt and just handed us the payment machine. We later noticed that a large party gratuity had already been added, which we understand many restaurants do, but not showing us the bill beforehand caused us to leave an additional tip.But the food is really good. The menu says the dishes are spicy but it is not the same kind of spicy as Sichuan food. The flavors are more on the mild side so if you like a little spice I recommend it. Since it is Hangzhou-style the taste is a bit sweeter which makes it different. The you tiao shrimp reminded me of home and was my favorite dish. The eggplant also surprised me. I usually do not like the soft texture or the slightly odd taste of eggplant but here it was cooked really well. The garlic flavor was strong and the fried texture made it delicious. The salted egg yolk shrimp with taro fries was another favorite. The flavor is on the heavier side but it goes perfectly with rice. The braised pork was more average but the tofu inside was great. It had a texture similar to vegetarian egg tofu and the flavor made me want to keep eating more.
August 24 · Penny FunFood is amazing. Took my parents here and they said it was better than most meals they’ve had at nice restaurants in China. Very authentic and “elegantly cooked” my parents said.We had (in order of photos) XLB, century egg*, scallion oil noodles*, soft shell crab, sweet & sour pork*, and sacha claypot with beef / tofu skin / mushrooms. The dishes with a * were especially good.Service was great, very attentive. Restaurant vibe is clean and pretty nice - in between casual and fine dining.Four stars cause (1) the tip options started from 20%, which is unreasonable (2) the table we were at had AC drip coming down on at least two seats at the table.
August 16 · Emily ChenAuthentic Chinese restaurant that Chinese actually go to. Good ambience and cozy meals. It’s small plate style so good to go with a few friends to share more dishes. Cocktail are well made and have mocktail optionsMy favorite is crispy soy glazed fish. Hard to find any alternative in the city can beat this one.
August 15 · ShuangerService was excellent and the mocktail options are great! We tried a few things - the pork buns (highly recommend, the crispy base is delightful), crispy stuffed tofu skin (could have been crispier), the kung pao shrimp (the peppercorn does get to you at a point), pork belly (the soy-laden tofu is great in this), scallion oil noodles (so simple, yet so good), and luffa with dried shrimp (the broth was excellent). There's so much more to the menu we didn't try and didn't even try dessert! As far as setting, the restaurant wasn't too loud and granted, we were there on a Sunday evening on the earlier side so while there was plenty of space, it did start to fill up around the time we left (8ish). Would definitely check it out if you're in the area.
August 01 · Nilima ShetI used to live in Hangzhou, and this restaurant was one of my favorites. Not only was it affordable, but the food was delicious and the portions were generous. The New York City version has an incredible location, but the menu is quite limited, and the prices are quite high. Despite these drawbacks, I still believe it’s a good option to try while you’re in the city.
