Hakata TonTon Introduce
If you're a New Yorker with a craving for Japanese food that goes beyond the typical sushi roll, you've likely heard of Hakata TonTon. Tucked away in the lively heart of New York City's Chinatown, this restaurant has built a loyal following by specializing in a unique and deeply flavorful style of Japanese cuisine. More than just a place to grab a meal, Hakata TonTon offers a dining experience that's both cozy and trendy, making it a perfect spot for those seeking comfort food with an authentic twist.
The name itself, "TonTon," is a nod to its specialty: dishes featuring "tonsoku," or pig's feet, celebrated for their rich collagen content. While this might sound adventurous, it's the foundation of some of the most beloved dishes on the menu, particularly the signature hot pots. These hot pots are a main draw, simmered in a nourishing, collagen-rich broth that's both hearty and delicious. But the menu is far from a one-trick pony. From classic izakaya-style small plates to unique fried favorites and even dim sum, Hakata TonTon provides a culinary journey through the Hakata region of Japan, a place known for its diverse culinary influences from neighboring China and Korea.
Whether you're looking for a casual dinner with friends, a late-night bite, or a welcoming place for a solo meal, Hakata TonTon delivers a memorable experience. Its atmosphere is inviting, and the staff is known for being incredibly friendly and welcoming, contributing to the overall positive vibe. It's the kind of place that feels like a hidden gem, where you can unwind and explore new flavors with confidence.

With a menu as extensive as Hakata TonTon's, it can be tough to decide what to order. Based on customer favorites and unique specialties, here's what's truly worth choosing:
You absolutely must try one of the hot pots, as they are the heart of the restaurant's identity. The Tonton Hot Pot or the spicy KaraTonton HotPot are excellent choices for a rich, satisfying, and shareable meal. The broth is deeply flavorful and a perfect example of what makes this place special. If you’re dining with a group, the large portion is perfect for sharing.
For appetizers, don't miss the Fried Favorites. The Karaage, a classic Japanese fried chicken, is crispy and delicious. For something a little different, the Tebasaki (chicken wings) are a great pick. The Uni Scallop and Goma Hamachi from the appetizers list are also highly recommended for their fresh, delicate flavors.
The Fried Rice dishes are also a standout. The Beef Garlic Fried Rice and Mentai Fried Rice are packed with flavor and make for a substantial and satisfying main course. And while not a traditional Japanese menu item, the DIM SUM selection is a pleasant and tasty surprise, with the Pork Soup Dumplings being a popular choice.
Finally, save room for dessert. The Roasted Goma Ice Cream is a perfect finish, with a nutty, creamy texture that's not too sweet. For something unique, the Green Tea Tofu offers a light and refreshing end to your meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The food was delicious. I ordered the small tonton pot and the portion was enough for two. The fried oysters were delicious and came with a delicious sauce (I think it was mentaiko egg mayo but not 100% sure). The pork in the hot pot was so soft and delicious, and the dessert was a perfect not-too-sweetness.The service was also excellent. We had the pleasure of interacting with multiple staff members and they were all extremely friendly and welcoming.
June 27 · William Nobutomo Shinwo KimDelicious Japanese food! I went here with some friends and we got a bunch of "street food" type of dishes and they were all really enjoyable. The beef garlic fried rice was really tasty, so was the okonomoyaki. We also got the wagyu yakiniku wrap which was pretty unique. It tasted good but it reminded me strangely of a big mac. Not in a bad way!Prices were a little high for Chinatown but about standard for this kind of Japanese food. I was pleasantly surprised, I would definitely be back!
July 31 · Ros BTasty comfort food, came here three times since they opened here. Many appetizer like dishes and motsu hotpot must try.
June 28 · Murat YILMAZNew place in Chinatown. We rode the bike in the city, looked to restaurant allowing us to place bikes in the restaurant. They were very kind to put our bikes.Foods are great, especially summer cold ramen. I loved it.
June 28 · 市川智丈Fresh beef liver lover rejoice !! The liver sashimi is so fresh it doesnt taste gamey. I like to go with the yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper) instead of the other 2 sauces being served.Other notable dishes to try is the hotpot and everything on the menu ( LOL ). Nothing really disappoint. This is our second time back and we are returning for xmas dinner !!
