Joe's Ginger Introduce
In the vibrant, winding streets of New York City's Chinatown, where culinary traditions run deep and every doorway promises a new adventure, a gem of a restaurant awaits at 25 Pell Street. Joe's Ginger, the esteemed sister restaurant to the famous Joe's Shanghai, has long been a go-to spot for those in the know. It has carved out its own identity by offering the same high-quality, authentic Shanghainese cuisine in a more casual, and often less crowded, setting. The restaurant's appeal lies in its straightforward approach: a dedication to classic, flavorful dishes that transport diners straight to Shanghai with every bite. The atmosphere is unpretentious and cozy, designed for a comfortable and relaxed meal, whether you're a local resident, a tourist exploring the area, or a group of friends gathering for a hearty feast.
Joe's Ginger is a culinary haven for anyone with a craving for genuine Shanghai-style food, a cuisine known for its rich, flavorful sauces and slow-cooked dishes. While the menu is extensive, featuring everything from appetizers to full entrees, it is the dim sum and noodle dishes that truly steal the show. The restaurant’s reputation is built on its "Xiao Long Bao," or soup dumplings, which are widely considered to be among the best in the city. These delicate, savory parcels, filled with either pork or a mix of pork and crab, are a must-try for any first-time visitor. Beyond the dumplings, the menu is a treasure trove of comfort food, including the beloved Crispy Pork Chop with Pepper Salt, savory casseroles, and a wide selection of fried rice and noodles. This focus on authentic, time-honored recipes, combined with a quick and efficient service model, ensures that Joe's Ginger remains a popular and reliable choice for a delicious meal in a neighborhood with no shortage of dining options.
Joe's Ginger is conveniently located at 25 Pell Street, a small and historic street that forms part of the quintessential Chinatown experience. The area is a hub of activity and is easily accessible from multiple parts of Manhattan and the surrounding boroughs. For those using public transportation, the restaurant is a short walk from several major subway stations. The 4, 6, J, and Z lines at Canal Street, as well as the N, Q, R, and W lines, are all within close proximity. This makes it simple to get to the restaurant from Midtown, Lower Manhattan, or Brooklyn without the need for a car. For visitors, the prime location also means it is an ideal spot to grab a bite after exploring the vibrant shops and landmarks of Chinatown, or as a dinner destination before a night out.
A key aspect of the restaurant’s accessibility is its casual, welcoming nature, which caters to a wide range of customers, from solo diners to large groups. While parking can be a challenge in this busy part of the city, the extensive public transit options more than compensate. It's important for visitors to note that the restaurant is a cash-only establishment, a common feature in many traditional Chinatown eateries. This is a crucial detail to remember for a smooth dining experience, though a number of ATMs are available nearby. The combination of its central location and a straightforward, accessible environment makes Joe's Ginger an easy choice for a delicious meal.

When considering where to eat in a place as packed with options as New York City's Chinatown, Joe's Ginger is an excellent choice for several compelling reasons. The primary reason is, without a doubt, the food. While some reviewers have noted a decline in service over time, the general consensus on the quality of the food, particularly the signature soup dumplings, remains positive. As one reviewer noted, the dumplings are "good" and the food is "delicious." The generous portions and very fair prices, especially for New York, make it a place where you can get a satisfying and flavorful meal without breaking the bank. The extensive menu ensures that even picky eaters will find something to love, and the late-night hours are a huge convenience. The option to buy frozen dumplings to enjoy at home is a testament to their popularity. While the atmosphere is casual and the service may be brisk, what truly matters is the food, and on that front, Joe's Ginger delivers. It's a place that is still worth visiting, especially for anyone who wants to try a classic, authentic Shanghainese experience. Despite the occasional critique, the core offerings—the famous soup dumplings and the overall value—make it a place worth choosing and returning to for a comforting and delicious meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Very frustrating as this place used to be great and now the food is super expensive and it doesn’t even taste good! I’d been okay if the food is decent but it’s not.The scallion pancake is dry and flakey. The soup dumplings have a weird taste. The dumplings are small and it’s not like the ones you’d seen at a proper dim sum restaurant.Portion is bad and the taste is off. I really don’t want to be critical to local business but this place needs a complete rethink of their model otherwise it’ll wash up on the shore of closed businessReally hoping for this place to come back!
April 15 · Tien FSoup dumplings are good, I’ve been here 4 times, each time I come the service gets worse. This will be my last time, not worth it. So sad though, they use to be so different. Worst service in NY.
June 24 · Sara FigueroaWalked in on a Saturday afternoon, clearly a reason why the place was empty and we were seated right away. Nothing special at all about the food, small portions and very expensive. Would also like to point out cash only and similar to other reviews waiter waiting beside as you pay the bill saying gratuity not included. Avoid this restaurant at all costs! There are much better Chinese restaurants in NYC.
July 19 · Lindsay LThe food was great, dumplings were amazing, however the service was terrible. The people working here were so rude to us, me in particular. I had given the exact amount to pay on the receipt, because I always leave the tip on the table. I’m from Ohio, so I’m not sure if that’s uncommon in NY or not. They refused to take the bill because I didn’t leave a tip yet. I had also questioned the bill three times because it didn’t seem accurate and each time was ignored. They refused to take the bill again when I got frustrated trying to get answers about the pricing because I still didn’t put a tip. In my opinion a tip wasn’t deserved because of the service. I left one to be nice anyway, but if I could do it all over again I would have left the money to pay the bill on the table and not have tipped at all.
April 08 · Lauren Miller-MazzantThe food was only OK, lacked flavor. The pork soup dumpling was a bit salty, and the beef pan-fried noodle was small for the price. The bean curd didn’t have much marinade taste either. It was a slow Saturday night, and the inside dining area was empty. They only accept cash, but there’s an ATM on their second floor.
