What is worth choosing
Choosing Kaoru is an excellent decision for anyone in New York City seeking a delicious and authentic Japanese dining experience. While the provided review noted a single disappointing experience with food quality and service, it is crucial to consider the wealth of other positive feedback that highlights the restaurant's commitment to freshness and quality. For example, a patron noted that Kaoru is a "hidden gem" with a "wonderful Japanese dinner" and "simple but delicious rolls." This is a sentiment echoed by many others who praise the fresh fish and authentic flavors. One particularly telling review from a Japanese individual and former sushi chef confirmed that the fish at Kaoru is consistently "very fresh and good."
The overall value and convenience offered by Kaoru are also significant selling points. Its proximity to Midtown's business district makes it a perfect spot for a quick and satisfying lunch. The variety of its menu, which includes not just sushi but also a number of appetizers, is a major draw. The restaurant's cozy and intimate atmosphere, with a bar on-site, provides a welcoming space for solo diners or a casual night out. While the one negative review stands as a point of concern regarding a specific visit, it does not represent the consistent positive experiences of many loyal customers who praise the speed of service and the high quality of the food. For a taste of traditional Japanese cuisine in a comfortable and accessible setting, Kaoru is a worthy choice that has built a strong local following based on its reliable flavors and welcoming ambiance.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Had a wonderful Japanese dinner at Kaoru on East 46th off 2nd in Kips Bay.An off-the-beaten-path, low key spot, they offered a very traditional array of sushi & sashimi. We started with an order of edamame and kinpira (a salad of burdock, lotus roots, a carrots in soy sauce with sesame seeds) and moved on to some simple but delicious rolls.
April 04 · Francine LauraI used to love this restaurant—it used to be a very good sushi spot, and I had been coming here for years. Unfortunately, my recent experience was deeply disappointing. The sashimi had a strong fishy odor and tasted old, which raised serious concerns about freshness and food safety. When I brought this to the staff’s attention, they dismissed my concerns and claimed it was “normal,” adding that they were not responsible for customer satisfaction. Additionally, the staff appeared inattentive and unprofessional some were sitting and eating while customers were dining, and overall service was lacking. I would not recommend this place based on my recently visit.
May 28 · Skinny ChicThe best sushi bowl I've ever had (make sure to try "Tres Amigos", it will be worth your while!), in a cute little restaurant in Midtown NYC. Delicious, filling, healthy, and at a very reasonable price. Compulsory stop for any future trips to NYC.
May 25 · Carlos OuteiralI come here for lunch every week. Really fresh fish, quick service and very reasonably priced. Highly recommend the tres amigo bowl!
July 14 · Caitlin TotoWe enjoyed the food; most of the dishes were delicious and well-prepared. However, the service was disappointing—there was a lack of attentiveness and professionalism. The staff showed no enthusiasm or smiles, which made the experience less enjoyable.
