This place is the real deal: local, totally authentic, no frills. I speak a small amount of Spanish, and the staff was super nice and patient, though they did laugh a bit when I asked for my eggs sunny side up (I didn’t know how else to order it — I guess just go with “normal” if you’re not sure!)I had the mangú con los tres golpes for breakfast, recommended by someone else’s review here. The portion, including passion fruit juice, was absolutely huge, and it only set me back $14.I’m glad I knew what I was getting beforehand, because there wasn’t a menu; it’s the sort of place where you just go up and order because most people know what they want already. If you don’t speak much Spanish and don’t know much about Dominican cuisine, it can be a little intimidating, but it’s worth it. - Doug Girardot

The absence of a formal menu is a sign that the food is fresh and prepared daily, a common practice in many traditional kitchens where you order what's available. This may be a bit intimidating for those unfamiliar with Dominican cuisine, but as one reviewer points out, "it’s worth it." This is a place for the food adventurer and for anyone who wants to step outside of the norm and savor flavors that are both complex and comforting. It’s a true local experience that makes you feel connected to the community and the culture.

What is Worth Choosing

The beauty of Marilu & Daysi is in its no-nonsense approach to food, focusing on classic dishes that are packed with flavor. For breakfast, a must-try item is the mangú con los tres golpes, as recommended by a reviewer. This classic dish features mashed plantains served with fried cheese, fried salami, and a fried egg, a truly hearty and satisfying way to start the day. The portion sizes are generous, with one customer noting that the portion, including a passion fruit juice, was "absolutely huge," all for a very reasonable price. Other appetizers like Pastelitos de pollo (chicken pastries) and Pastelitos de Queso (cheese pastries) are also great for a quick snack or to start off your meal.

When it comes to lunch or dinner, the focus is on a variety of main dishes served with classic sides. Traditional Dominican plates often consist of a protein like meat or chicken, served with a base of rice, beans, and often plantains. The review mentioning arroz, habichuelas, y carne (rice, beans, and meat) highlights the classic nature of their offerings. While there may not be a formal menu, the freshness and quality of the food speak for themselves. This is the kind of place where you can trust that whatever the kitchen is cooking that day will be delicious. The fact that the food "tasted good" is a consistent point in reviews, even from those who had issues with pricing.

While one review noted a surprising cost and the lack of a menu, this is a part of the "real deal" authenticity. For those new to this type of dining, it's a good idea to ask for prices upfront. However, the general consensus is that the food is both delicious and satisfying. The staff's kindness and patience, even with a language barrier, further add to the welcoming atmosphere. It’s a place that invites you to be a part of its culture, and in return, you get to enjoy a truly special meal. The simple fact that a reviewer who rarely writes reviews felt compelled to do so to warn others of pricing issues, but still noted that the "food tasted good," speaks to the overall quality of the cuisine. Marilu & Daysi is a place to go when you want a genuine, comforting meal that feels like a taste of home, even if it's not your own.
