Ootoya's approach to Japanese cuisine is unique in New York City. While many places focus on specific types of food like sushi or noodles, Ootoya excels at creating a complete, well-rounded meal. The teishoku sets, which include a main dish, rice, miso soup, and a side of vegetables, are a cornerstone of their offerings and reflect the traditional way of eating in Japan. This focus on balance and flavor has garnered high praise from customers who appreciate the authentic and homestyle quality of the food. The attention to detail, from the perfectly cooked rice to the delicate flavors of their grilled fish, showcases their commitment to culinary excellence. Even with the tight seating that can sometimes be a reality in New York, the cozy and warm ambiance makes the dining experience pleasant and memorable. It’s a place where you can relax and savor each bite, making it an excellent choice for a leisurely lunch or a satisfying dinner. The menu's variety, with options ranging from hearty katsu to elegant sushi bowls, ensures that every visit can be a new culinary adventure. The welcoming vibe, combined with the genuine taste of home-cooked Japanese food, makes Ootoya a highly recommended spot for anyone in the area.
The popularity of Ootoya in a high-traffic location like Times Square is a clear indicator of its success and quality. Despite the constant rush of the neighborhood, the restaurant maintains a consistently high standard of food and service. This is especially impressive given the large crowds it attracts, including families, groups, and solo diners. The fact that the restaurant can provide a peaceful, welcoming environment while still being efficient is a major plus. The menu is designed to be approachable and informative, with clear descriptions that help customers navigate the different dishes. The availability of a full bar with a good selection of beer, wine, and cocktails also makes it a great spot for an after-work gathering or a pre-theater drink. Ootoya’s ability to combine authentic flavors with a modern, comfortable setting makes it a standout choice for anyone looking for a quality Japanese meal that feels both special and satisfying. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Ootoya in Midtown is my go-to spot for authentic Japanese set meals in a cozy atmosphere. I enjoyed everything about our visit. The food was delicious, beautifully presented, and felt like a comforting Japanese home-cooked meal. We ordered a kids’ meal for my toddler, and he absolutely loved it! The food came in a rocket-shaped plate, which made the experience fun and exciting. The seating can be a bit tight depending on where you’re placed, but it’s manageable. A great spot for anyone craving authentic Japanese flavors with a warm, welcoming vibe.
August 04 · AnnaFirst meal in NYC. Waited for 5 minutes and sat on a bar table on Sunday night. Recommend Washu beef sukiyaki nabe (added a onsen tamago), Katsu toji with chicken, and beef potato croquette. All of them are tasty, and I feel it worthwhile to add rice to make it a set (really good Japanese rice). Paid 90 (before tax and tip) for 2 people, but in general I feel it a bit pricey though (but maybe that’s reasonable price on time square… I’m not sure) No one added water to our table so I feel the service could be improved.
June 15 · ShikiGreat fish dishes here. Tons of different menus make it a bit confusing but that means more choices.Good sake options and various smaller dishes.Miso fish was my choice and a great one.
April 26 · Albert KFirst visit to this location, usually going to the Chelsea branch. As usual, good quality Japanese food at pretty good prices and good service in a pleasant spot, convenient to the theater district. Recommend!
April 24 · ESB NYCI've had unagi (eel) quite a few times but the unagi at Ootoya was spectacular. It was well cooked and tender. The rice portion was just enough to satisfy and the sweet soy sauce gives it the classic touch. The salmon sashimi was tender and flavorful with hints of citrus. The warabi mochi was made in house and was soft and slightly chewy. The brown sugar syrup at the bottom was a little too strong for my taste but the mochi was delicious. The mochi was definitely more delicate than what you can buy at the Japanese grocery store. Everything I ordered at Ootoya exceeded my expectations. I would definitely go there again and try other things on their menu.
