Tokuyamatcha & Onigirazu Bar Introduce
In the vibrant and fast-paced culinary world of New York City, Tokuyamatcha & Onigirazu Bar stands out as a unique and innovative destination. Located at 115 E 27th St, New York, NY 10016, this charming spot has quickly become a local favorite for those seeking a fresh, convenient, and truly delicious meal. It specializes in two key offerings that are a perfect blend of modern and traditional Japanese culture: Onigirazu, a type of Japanese rice sandwich, and a selection of authentic, high-quality matcha and other specialty teas.
The concept of Onigirazu, a flat, sandwich-like rice ball, is a clever and satisfying evolution of the classic Japanese Onigiri. At Tokuyamatcha & Onigirazu Bar, each one is a work of art, with a beautiful cross-section that reveals the generous fillings within. Unlike traditional onigiri, which are typically small and simple, these "rice ball sandwiches" are substantial, packed with a perfect balance of protein, carbs, and vegetables. They are made-to-order, ensuring that every bite is fresh, warm, and texturally diverse. The care put into each item is a testament to the dedication of the staff, who prepare the food right in front of you, adding to the immersive and enjoyable experience.
Beyond the savory offerings, the restaurant's namesake, Tokuyamatcha, is a destination in itself. They pride themselves on serving premium-grade matcha sourced directly from Japan. Whether you prefer a traditional Premium Matcha Tea or a creamy and indulgent Creamy Matcha Latte, the quality is evident in the vibrant color and smooth, earthy flavor. The menu also features creative twists on classic drinks, such as the Yuzu Ginger Honey Matcha and the Iced Calpico Matcha Latte, offering something for every palate. The combination of these two core specialties—the hearty Onigirazu and the exquisite matcha—makes Tokuyamatcha & Onigirazu Bar more than just a place to eat; it’s a place to experience authentic Japanese street food culture with a modern, New York twist.
Customer reviews consistently praise the restaurant for its exceptional food and unique concept. Many customers express a desire to return on every visit to New York, specifically to get their hands on a favorite item like the Chicken Karaage Onigirazu with Garlic Chili Oil. The friendliness and attentiveness of the staff are also a common theme in feedback, with the atmosphere described as casual and trendy. This combination of delicious, well-crafted food, a welcoming environment, and an efficient service model solidifies its place as an underrated gem in the city.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is one of 3 places I always make sure to visit when I am back in New York. I dream about their Chicken Karaage Garlic Chili Oil Onigirazu on a monthly basis. It is perfectly flavored, well-seasoned, texturally diverse, made-to-order, and a good balance of protein, carbs, and veg. It is also a great portion of food to either split or eat yourself, depending on how hungry you are. My tip would be to go with a friend, get two onigirazus, and split them. The setup of this store is nice because you can watch your food being prepared right in front of you. And the employee uniforms are cute. It comes pre-split and beautifully packaged to show the cross-section, so the experience from start to finish is perfect. Everyone I've recommended this place to has loved it and I will continue giving this establishment all my money because there is nowhere else I'd rather put it.Their miso tuna avocado onigirazu is also a solid option but the karaage one is truly extraordinary. I really do not think you can go wrong with any of their offerings. It's clear they are doing something right because everyone in the restaurant smiling, laughing with joy, or saying "wow" between each bite.Next time I come back (which WILL be happening), I will need to try their matcha, as the color looked vibrant.
June 26 · Jeana JooThe creamy matcha is so incredibly top tier!! I am convinced it’s the best thing to order here. The beef sandwich was really good!! I wish the filling went a little bit further to the edge so that you’re not left with a big bite of rice at the end but it’s great. The sandwiches are filling but I could easily eat the whole thing.Don’t expect seating on the weekend (one table outside)It’s a great gluten free friendly option.
March 22 · Cassia AOrdered the Salmon and Shiso Onigirazu and the Japanese Fried Chicken with Yuzu Ponzu Scallions Onigrazu. Great to get two to share between two people. They’re served cut in half and densely packed. The Salmon and Shiso Onigirazu was made of cooked salmon flakes, shiso (perilla leaves), rice, lettuce, Japanese mayo, and sesame. This was a well balanced sweet and salty sandwich with prominent salmon flavor and the crunch of the lettuce. The Japanese Fried Chicken with Yuzu Ponzu Scallions also had a kick from the chili peppers. This one had a spicy kick after each bite that was pleasant. This is a great option if you’re a big fan of scallions as they use a generous amount and the yuzu zest cuts through the scallion to undertone them. The chicken in here is small bite size clumps seasoned well with a light teriyaki flavor. Both of these sandwiched between beds of warm, soft rice made these very filling meals. Line was not too long around lunch but the chefs here really take their time preparing these meals so be prepared to sit on the side. There is some tight seating inside and a large bench outside. The interior is very calm and bright with a peaceful atmosphere, not loud at all. Service was very mannerful, methodic, and kind.
July 25 · Kevin ChenI would recommend the onigirazu but not the matcha. I tried the hibiscus and creamy matchas and both were lackluster. The hibiscus overpowered the matcha and the combination of flavors was not appetizing. The creamy matcha was just a thicker consistency and half of the cup was filled with ice. It did not have any cream top like the photos show; it was just a single thicker consistency drink.
April 21 · Jerica HuangAwesome look, might have had a bad experience because a rookie was making my food. Tuna miso and salmon avocado, not much spice. They left all the ponzu and yuzu off my fried chicken.
