Wayan Introduce
Wayan, a standout name in New York City's vibrant dining scene, offers a truly unique culinary journey by masterfully blending the bold, vibrant flavors of Indonesia with the refined techniques of modern French cuisine. Under the guidance of Chef Cédric Vongerichten, this Michelin-recognized restaurant is more than just a place to eat—it's a destination that transports diners from the bustling streets of Nolita to a sophisticated, tropical-inspired oasis. Wayan is a celebration of Chef Vongerichten's first independent culinary venture, and the name itself, which in Balinese culture is given to the first-born child, reflects this. From the moment you step inside, you are immersed in an atmosphere that is both cozy and polished, with a warm energy that makes it perfect for a relaxed dinner or a special evening out.
The restaurant's design, featuring teak paneling, lush plants, and whitewashed brick, creates a sophisticated yet welcoming space. The atmosphere is noted as "not too loud or too quiet," striking the perfect balance for a memorable night. Wayan's ethos is a fusion of two worlds: the bold, authentic flavors of Jakarta, where Chef's wife Ochi is from, and the precise, elevated touch of the Vongerichten culinary lineage. This thoughtful approach extends beyond the food to the service, which is consistently described as excellent, attentive, and never overbearing. It’s a place where every element, from the meticulously crafted cocktails to the beautifully presented dishes, works in harmony to create an all-encompassing experience.
Wayan is conveniently located at 20 Spring St, New York, NY 10012, USA, in the picturesque and trendy Nolita neighborhood. This location places it within easy reach of SoHo, the Lower East Side, and Chinatown, making it a prime spot for a diverse crowd of locals and tourists. The restaurant's central Manhattan address ensures excellent accessibility via public transportation. It's a short walk from several subway stations, allowing for a seamless journey from different parts of the city.
For those who prefer to dine al fresco, Wayan also offers outdoor seating, which is a popular choice during warmer months. The restaurant's thoughtful design and prime location make it an ideal setting for both a quiet dinner for two and a larger group gathering. While street parking can be found, it is limited, so using public transit or ride-sharing services is often the most convenient option in this busy area.
Wayan offers a comprehensive range of services and amenities that enhance the dining experience.

- Unique Menu Concept: The menu masterfully blends Indonesian staples with modern French flair. Dishes like the Escargot Rendang and Avocado "Gado Gado" demonstrate this creative and successful fusion.
- Sophisticated and Welcoming Ambiance: The decor, which includes a front room that is more casual and a moodier rear dining room, creates a transportive experience that feels both refined and comfortable.

What truly makes Wayan worth choosing is its ability to deliver a special, yet unfussy, dining experience. The restaurant is a perfect example of a place where "everything just works." The service is impeccable—attentive, thoughtful, and never overbearing. The food, while described by one reviewer as a flowing experience, is consistently praised for being delicious and well-prepared. It's a place where you can be an adventurous eater and be rewarded with perfectly balanced flavors. The Lobster Noodles, specifically highlighted by a satisfied customer, are a must-try. Described as having the "perfect level of spice & flavor," this dish is a testament to the kitchen's skill in creating memorable and delicious plates.
Beyond the main courses, the small plates and appetizers, such as the Octopus a la Plancha and the variety of satays, offer a great way to sample the menu's breadth. The cocktails are a definite highlight, with unique creations like the Indo-Negroni and Calamansi Fizz. The friendly and knowledgeable staff, especially at the bar, adds a personal touch that makes you feel valued. The generous gesture of a free drink and a thoughtful non-alcoholic option for a guest who doesn't drink shows a level of hospitality that is hard to come by. Whether you are looking for a romantic dinner, a casual lunch, or a place for a group celebration, Wayan delivers an experience that is consistently high-quality, memorable, and well worth the price. It's a culinary escape that brings a little piece of Bali to the heart of New York.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Wayan is one of those places where everything just works. From the moment we arrived, the service was excellent, attentive, thoughtful, and never overbearing. The atmosphere is cozy and polished, with a comfortable energy. Not too loud or too quiet, just right for a relaxed dinner or a nice evening out.The food was consistently good though each dish blurred into the next. The whole meal flowed in a way that made it feel special without being fussy, but there wasn't particularly anything remarkable of the savory dishes ..Dessert really stood out though! The passion fruit pudding was light and bright, and the warm cookie with cheese ice cream was unexpected and delicious. Easily one of the most memorable parts of the meal. The bartender was great, friendly and generous with information and recommendations. He gave us a couple of free drinks and even remembered that one person in our group doesn’t drink, bringing out a thoughtful non-alcoholic option without being asked.Overall, Wayan delivers. Great food, great service, and a space that feels welcoming and easy to enjoy.
July 03 · Yiyi ZhangStopped in for a quick dinner at the bar and was very pleased within the lobster noodles & the scallops. Noodles were the perfect level of spice & flavor. Had a Cherry Breeze mocktail & the bartender gave me a scoop of mango sorbet. Service was on point even as more people trickled in for dinner. The restaurant looks beautiful. They also have outdoor seating.I’d definitely eat here again & try something else on the menu.Appetizer + entree + cocktail + tip was about $100.
July 28 · Angela K.Food was okay but the closest thing to Indonesian is only the corn fritters, it’s simple but good. We come here usually only for the lobster noodles, we tried a lot of food here but nothing really stand out. But definitely try the lobster noodle!
August 20 · AlicelyfeeWayan is a nice try at Indonesian fusion — ambitious, but falls short of a home run. Food would've been 4 stars but I docked a star for poor value. We ordered a raw fish appetizer, escargot rendang, crispy baby squid, cucumber mango salad, sate, crab fried rice, and steamed black sea bass.Portions are small and best experienced family style. Good for sampling, but not great value.Flavors ranged from excellent to disappointing. The cilantro sauce on the squid was a standout, while the rendang was bland (couldn't even imagine saying this about rendang ever) and the crab fried rice was overwhelmingly salty. The raw fish didn’t taste fresh — a common issue at many NYC spots unless you’re dining high-end, and a noticeable letdown for anyone coming from the West Coast.Service was friendly, but they forgot our sate. Worth noting that it wasn't a particularly busy evening. We didn’t notice until we left, and while the vibe was great and we still had fun, the food didn’t quite live up to the hype.Won't be back. Plenty of other spots in the city to check out.
June 16 · Su Fen GohThe interior is very eye-pleasing and overall creates a serene atmosphere. It was hard to choose out of so many different options, but the waiter gave us great suggestions and every dish tasted amazing. I still think about this place although it’s been a while since I went. This would be one of the restaurants I’d bring friends visiting NYC to.
