I’ve heard of this chain and have been wanting to try one, so when in Newark for work and learning that there was a Xi’an Famous Food location close to a Path train station, I made time to come check it out. I got there around 1PM and they were packed; in fact, they stayed very busy the entire time I was in there. I was worried about finding a place to sit to eat, but I will say that everyone in there was very respectful of their time – they ate fast and got out! And they were also very respectful of the signage that says there’s no one who manages and cleans the dining room, so clean up after yourself. The dining room was perfectly clean.I placed my order via one of their kiosks and waited about 15 mins for the food to be made. The kitchen is open, so you can see them all working back there, and they’re hustling! But the place is just that busy!!The food I tried was really good! The flavors were incredible!! The cucumber was probably the best I’ve had, mostly because of the incredible flavors of the chili oil, but the very fresh cucumber they smashed was excellent too. I tried the spicy & tingly beef muscle w/hand-ripped noodles and it was really tasty! The noodles were pretty good, but they were very long and could be tough to eat, without dipping your head in for each bite. The only issue I had was the amount of fat/connective tissue was thick and there wasn’t much beef to eat – so I ended up only eating a little of the actual beef. But I loved the sauce and noodles! If I go back, which I will, I’ll get the lamb done in a similar way.I felt the prices were decent for the amount of food and the great flavors. Definitely will return! - F'burg Foodie

What is worth choosing

For a unique culinary adventure, Xi'an Famous Foods is an unparalleled choice in New York City. The menu is a treasure trove of delicious and authentic dishes, and there are a few standouts that are absolutely worth trying.

The Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles are arguably the most famous dish and a perfect introduction to the restaurant's signature flavors. The lamb is tender, and the rich, savory cumin sauce combined with the fiery chili oil is a flavor explosion that is both addictive and memorable. For those who prefer a broth-based dish, the Spicy Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles In Soup offers a similar flavor profile in a comforting, soupy form.

Another popular choice is the Stewed Pork Burger. This is not a traditional American burger but rather a 'roujiamo,' a kind of Chinese 'burger' with slow-cooked, tender pork stuffed into a crispy, baked bun. It's a fantastic quick bite and a perfect partner for the noodles.

Don't overlook the side dishes and appetizers. The Liang Pi "Cold Skin Noodles" are a refreshing alternative, especially during warmer months. These noodles are served cold with a spicy and sour sauce, cucumber, and bean sprouts, offering a completely different but equally delicious experience. The Spicy Asian Cucumber Salad is another excellent option for a cool, crunchy contrast to the rich, spicy main courses.

For those who are a fan of dumplings, the Spicy & Sour Lamb Dumplings are a must. They come in a bowl of flavorful soup and offer a burst of flavor in every bite. Finally, the homemade chili oil is so popular that the restaurant sells it in jars, allowing you to bring a taste of Xi'an Famous Foods home with you. It is a testament to the fact that their unique flavor profile is something people want to have with them all the time.
