Yi Ji Shi Mo Introduce
For those who know authentic Cantonese food, a perfectly made rice roll, or cheung fun, is a true delicacy. In the heart of New York City's Chinatown, Yi Ji Shi Mo has become a beloved destination for this very dish. This is not your typical sit-down restaurant; it's a small, bustling, no-frills spot with a singular mission: to produce the most authentic and delicious steamed rice rolls you can find in the city.
What sets Yi Ji Shi Mo apart is its commitment to tradition. They hand-make and steam each rice roll on-site, a process that ensures a delicate, silky texture that is unmatched. The result is a dish that is light, flavorful, and incredibly comforting. For many New Yorkers and visitors, the quality of the food and the reasonable prices make it an essential stop. It's the kind of place that transports you with every bite, reminding those who have had this dish in their hometowns of its unique and cherished flavor.
The atmosphere is casual and the service is straightforward, reflecting its focus on high-quality, quick-serve food. While you may encounter a wait during busy times, the consensus among loyal customers is that the experience and the food are absolutely worth it. Yi Ji Shi Mo has solidified its place as a go-to for breakfast, lunch, or a quick dinner, a true testament to the power of focusing on one dish and doing it to perfection.
Yi Ji Shi Mo is located at 88 Elizabeth St, New York, NY 10013, USA. This address places it firmly within the vibrant and dynamic neighborhood of Chinatown. Getting to Yi Ji Shi Mo is convenient thanks to its central location. It's easily accessible by public transportation, with several subway stations within a short walking distance. Parking can be a bit challenging in this dense part of Manhattan. While there is paid street parking available, spots are often limited. A paid multi-storey car park is also an option for those driving. The space inside the restaurant is small, with very limited seating. The primary service model is takeaway, but for those who manage to snag a spot, the experience of enjoying the food fresh from the steamer is a treat. It’s a great spot for solo diners or those looking for a quick and satisfying meal on the go.
- Takeaway: This is the most common way to enjoy Yi Ji Shi Mo's food. The service is quick and efficient, even with a crowd, though some customers recommend calling ahead during peak hours.
- Dine-in: While seating is very limited, you can dine in at the counter. This allows you to eat the rice rolls while they are at their freshest, which many consider to be the ideal way to enjoy them.
- On-site services: The restaurant operates as a counter-service establishment, where you order directly and wait for your food to be made fresh on the spot.
- Hand-made, Freshly Steamed Rice Rolls: This is the star of the show. Yi Ji Shi Mo makes their rice rolls on-site and to order, ensuring an incredibly delicate, silky texture that is difficult to find elsewhere.
- Cash Only: A key detail to note is that this establishment is cash-only. This adds to its authentic, no-frills charm and is an important piece of information for first-time visitors to remember.
- Wide Variety of Fillings: The menu offers a great selection of fillings, from classic shrimp and beef to more unique options like roast pork, corn, and curry fish ball.
- Authentic Sauces: The rice rolls come with a variety of sauces, including peanut butter, sweet sauce, and hot sauce, which add a delicious layer of flavor to the dish. The soy sauce provided is particularly praised for enhancing the flavor of the rice rolls.
- Affordable Prices: Customers consistently highlight the reasonable prices for the large portions, making it a fantastic spot for a cheap and satisfying meal in the city.
- Unique Menu Items: Beyond the rice rolls, Yi Ji Shi Mo offers other traditional items like curry fish balls, handmade rice noodles, and a variety of congee, providing a more complete Cantonese dining experience.

At Yi Ji Shi Mo, the choice is clear: you must try the steamed rice rolls. The menu offers a range of fillings, and while each is delicious, some stand out as particular favorites among regulars.
For a classic and satisfying experience, the Shrimp Rice Roll is highly recommended. For those who can't decide, the "shrimp party" or combination special is noted as a fantastic choice that allows you to sample several different fillings. The Roast Pork Rice Roll is another popular option that delivers a rich, savory flavor. The Beef Rice Roll is a comforting and hearty choice that is a staple for many.
Beyond the rice rolls, the Curry Fish Ball is a small but flavorful side that adds a nice touch to the meal. You should also consider ordering some of the other items that make this place unique. The congee, a traditional rice porridge, is a perfect complement to the rice rolls, especially on a chilly day. And for a simple but delicious drink, the Soy Milk is a great choice.
A crucial piece of advice from experienced patrons is to plan for a wait, especially during popular times. The best strategy is to place your order and then spend some time exploring the nearby shops in Chinatown. You can call ahead to check on wait times, which can be a smart move. The wait is a small price to pay for the chance to taste a dish that is so expertly and authentically prepared. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This small restaurant makes absolutely amazing rice rolls with the best one being the shrimp party of the combination special. The prices at every reasonable and includes sauces. The wait times can be a bit long but the best thing to do is to order first then go shopping and come back after the usual 25-30 minutes wait. It is definitely worth it and recommend trying if you are around.
May 24 · Kendrick BuiThis is a unique place that sells hand-made and steamed on-site 肠粉 that you find no where else in the states. My hometown in China had this type of food and I missed it so much for years till I found this place. I wish they offered it in a wonton soup or some kind of meat soup. Portion is large for the price. Difficult to find seating. The spices are good too.
August 19 · Lingchao MaoDelicious fresh rice rolls! Delicate layers of soft rice rolls, wrapped around your filling of choice, that has just the right amount of texture/chew. Topped with their sweet soy sauce (that comes in a packet on the side), it really is a perfect bite.Got the #1 signature and #10 beef, which both had a generous amount of filling. There was definitely a wait, about 30 to 40mins, so I would recommend calling ahead to place your order. The service can feel quite brisk but it's efficient. The store front is small and there's not much room to wait inside. There are 2-3 stools outside to sit and eat on, otherwise best to take away.
June 08 · Whitney WA genuinely superb rice roll. So silky, thin, fresh, and brilliantly architectured. Like actually the best cheung fun I’ve had (not that I’m an expert or anything but it was straight gas).By 8:30 an egg rice roll was a 40 minute wait lol!! Which is INSANE. But they had some pre made ones which I got for $5 (cash) and it was delicious. The ones they have pre made are #15. I’d highly recommend it was delicious. You can see they make the rolls - they’re super super fresh. There’s not much filling in it but it’s like a normal amount of filling.Very, very good gluten free food option. No seating.
August 02 · Cassia AYou think you know what rice rolls taste like from dim sum, but you don't. This is what a rice roll should taste like and what I'll be judging all rolls against from now on! Hearty, smooth, rich and oh so delicious.Fish balls were good but pale in comparison to the silken mattress of flavor they lay on. Will definitely be back to try the others!Cash only! Small counter to eat, and 2 stools outside.
