Chi'Lantro Introduce
For those in Houston seeking a meal that breaks the mold, offering a creative and delicious twist on familiar flavors, Chi'Lantro is a must-visit destination. This isn't your traditional Korean restaurant; it's a vibrant, fast-casual concept that masterfully blends the bold, savory flavors of Korean BBQ with the comforting, customizable style of Tex-Mex cuisine. Founded in Austin and having found a beloved home in the Houston Heights, Chi'Lantro has built a reputation on its unique approach to fusion food, making it a popular choice for lunch, dinner, and solo dining. It's a place where the atmosphere is as inviting as the food is flavorful, perfect for college students, families, and groups alike.
The star of the show at Chi'Lantro is undoubtedly "The Original Kimchi Fries™." This iconic dish, which has achieved legendary status among fans, features a bed of crispy French fries topped with homemade caramelized kimchi, your choice of protein, melted cheese, fresh herbs, and a drizzle of Chi'Lantro's signature sauces. It's a perfect example of the restaurant's fusion concept—a harmonious blend of crispy, spicy, savory, and cheesy that creates an addictively good flavor. While some die-hard fans might reminisce about its food truck origins, the modern restaurant continues to serve up the same delicious flavors that made it famous.
Beyond the famous fries, Chi'Lantro is best known for its "build-your-own" concept, which has been compared to a "Korean version of Chipotle." This allows every diner to craft a meal that suits their exact preferences. You can start with a bowl (rice or noodles), choose from a variety of Korean BBQ-inspired proteins like marinated beef or K'Pop chicken, and then pile on fresh toppings like black beans, esquites, and kimchi. The experience is both interactive and satisfying, giving you complete control over your flavor journey. The variety of sauces, from the "Magic Sauce" to "Spicy Ranch," adds another layer of customization, ensuring no two meals are exactly the same.
The menu also features other standout items that showcase the restaurant’s versatility. The "Ssäm," a Korean word meaning "wrap," allows you to enjoy your favorite ingredients in a convenient, handheld form. The "K'Pop Chicken" is another fan favorite, celebrated for its "addictive crunch and zesty flavors." For those seeking lighter or healthier options, Chi'Lantro offers a "Tofu Noodle Bowl" and a "Soy Glazed Chicken Avocado Bowl," demonstrating its commitment to providing choices for a wide range of dietary needs, including vegan and vegetarian options. The casual, trendy, and brightly-lit interior provides a welcoming space for everyone, from a solo diner to a large family, and the business identifies as LGBTQ+ friendly and a transgender safespace, reinforcing its inclusive community spirit.

Chi'Lantro Reviews

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’ve always loved the bowls here, but decided to try the “ssam” tonight. VERY disappointing. It’s 75% rice, super dry & fell apart when I bit into it, and I found maybe 2 pieces of each topping I selected. Also, I clearly ordered queso and got a cup of guacamole. This quickly and unfortunately changed my opinion on one of my favorite spots in Austin.
August 23 · Tara OdamsChi’Lantro is like a Korean version of chipotle. It’s different from its food truck version. You can still get their kimchi fries and add steak (it’s steak in bulgogi sauce, not American style steak) and it tastes just like it did years ago (delicious)…. but for a higher price.I got the tofu bowl and it was pretty good! I would recommend it. And the kimchi fries are great too.Interior is nice and clean, bright lighting and open spaces, staff isn’t rude. Some die hard food truck OGs might not like it “because Chilantro changed” but as a newbie, I like it. Like I said, it’s like a Korean chipotle where you can make your own bowl or burrito (called a Saam).
March 26 · Jade M.This review is for their Houston Heights location, which I visited recently (Chil’antro is originally a chain from Austin). The food here is pretty tasty although a bit pricey, but still worth a try IMO.They have typical fusion items such as kimchi fries and chicken wings, but my favorite menu item by far was their Chi’lantro Mexican-style Bibimbap ($15), which is a unique mix between the Mexican taco bowl and Korean rice bowl dish Bibimbap. The bowl is pretty healthy as far as Korean-Mexican fusion goes and I would come back just for the bowl I think. It reminded me of a Chipotle bowl, but with better quality ingredients (for a higher price) and a Korean twist. The inside is pretty new and has modern decor, a good spot for a quick lunch or dinner IMO.
April 21 · Matthew ChenThe food was good but the k.pop chicken was alittle too crunchy for my liking; just a personal preference, but all around it’s a good spot.
June 07 · MusyyChi’Lantro is a fusion take on other build your own burrito/bowl restaurants. I did the K-pop chicken bowl. The chicken itself is fried super crispy like you would expect from Korean fried chicken. The sauce has a sweet and sour chicken meats peanut butter vibe to me. All the veggies and everything that were on top made the bowl much lighter and fresher which was nice. The sauces are good but I much prefer the lighter magic sauce over the spicy ranch as it seemed fresher and was less like a dipping sauce. I would suggest getting your sauce on the side just in case. Good portions for the price IMO.
