Down the Hatch Introduce
Tucked away in the heart of the West Village,
Down the Hatch is a New York institution that has been a favorite for college students, locals, and sports fans for decades. This bar and grill is the quintessential dive bar, offering a no-frills, high-energy environment where the focus is on good times, great drinks, and classic comfort food. It's a place that welcomes everyone, from those looking for a quick, cheap beer to groups settling in to watch the big game.
What sets Down the Hatch apart is its unpretentious and friendly atmosphere. It's the kind of place you can walk into and feel right at home, a rare find in a city often known for its exclusive and pricey venues. The bar's reputation for being "a true dive bar" is worn as a badge of honor, and it's this authenticity that keeps people coming back. With its legendary happy hour deals and a menu of American classics, it’s a reliable spot for a fun night out without breaking the bank. Whether you're a student, a tourist, or a long-time New Yorker, Down the Hatch provides an experience that is both memorable and refreshingly simple.
Down the Hatch is located at 179 W 4th St, New York, NY 10014, USA. Its location in the vibrant West Village places it in the center of one of Manhattan's most dynamic and historic neighborhoods. The area is easily accessible, and the bar is just a short walk from several major subway lines, including the W 4th St-Wash Sq and Christopher St-Sheridan Sq stations. The bar itself is located a few steps below street level, giving it a classic "hole-in-the-wall" charm that is part of its appeal.
While the venue is more of a traditional basement bar, it is committed to accessibility, with its website outlining its efforts to meet web accessibility standards. For those driving, paid street parking is available, though it can be scarce in this bustling part of town. The location is perfect for those exploring the area and in need of a casual, lively place to refuel and relax.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I'm sure it's fantastic for locals who are looking for your run-of-the-mill basic beer options, but as visitors we were hoping for some more authentic local NY beer options. As far as food, we got the Lemon Garlic Pepper and the Honey BBQ wings with Waffle Fries, but the Honey BBQ wings were the only one of those items that we really enjoyed and honestly the only reason I consider giving the food any stars at all. Staff was friendly, everything was pretty affordable, and it has a nice atmosphere. If you're hungry for wings and thirsty for any kind of beer it's an alright choice
August 15 · BitIncredible bar! We walked past and saw the happy hour and just had stop by and ended up spending a couple of hours there. Alex the bartender was incredible friendly and made the tastiest spicy margarita we have ever had. Very good service and nice and clean place. Will be going there again before my trip ends, wish I lived here and could become a regular💖
June 30 · oklartSuper dive bar ! They have different happy hour every day, for example on Saturday all the bottles and cans are $5. There are some TVs to watch a football game and there is plenty of space to enjoy a beer with your friends. I would definitely recommend if you are in the area !
December 07 · guy estragonAlways a great place to enjoy some delicious wings and a beer!I always take a trip back in time when visiting since my husband found this place as a USMA Cadet (20 years ago!) on weekend leave and we stop by every time we are in the city. This time we brought our kids back!!We sat on the patio and enjoyed our time together, even though I wasn’t able to eat indoors. Thankful that option is offered!
January 15 · Angie KFun spot to grab brunch! Good bottomless deal - $40 includes entree and mimosas or beers. Can enjoy the beer pong as well!
