Very good northern Chinese food.Came here as a group of three for Saturday lunch. Not crowded and the service was attentive. We ordered several dishes as the portion isn’t large:Those we like: mutton on the bone and monstrous plate chicken. The mutton was fresh and tasty. Be mindful of the reasoning on the side as it is super salty - a little bit would do. The chicken was great! Greasy, yummy and a little bit spicy. The noodles on the bottom soaked the flavor well! Those are just so-so: Mung Bean noodles and lamb rice pilaf. The rice was very little portion and would fill probably just one person, though the taste was good. The bean noodles was average, nothing special.Price is a little high, but consider their location it is still a fair one. Would recommend this place! - Tian G

  • Authentic Hand-Pulled Noodles: A cornerstone of their menu, the noodles are prepared with care and skill. Customers can even choose their preferred thickness—thin, regular, thick, wide, or extra wide—to perfectly complement their chosen dish. This customization adds a personal touch to the dining experience. The experience of cutting the extra-long noodles with scissors is a unique and memorable feature that highlights the authenticity of the preparation.
  • Mutton on the Bone and Lamb Dishes: Lamb is a signature protein in Northern Chinese cuisine, and Dunhuang excels at preparing it. The "Mutton on the Bone" is a highly recommended dish, praised for its fresh and tasty quality. The "Lamb Rice Pilaf" is another popular choice, though some may find the portion size to be modest.
  • Monstrous Plate Chicken: This is a standout entree, described as greasy, yummy, and a little bit spicy. The noodles at the bottom of the plate soak up the rich, flavorful sauce, creating a dish that is both hearty and incredibly satisfying.
  • Variety of Skewers: The BBQ skewers, available during dinner, are a highlight. The menu features a wide array of options, including Lamb Tenderloin Skewers, Lamb Chops, Crispy Chicken Wings, and even vegetarian options like Scalloped Potato and Cauliflower. These skewers are perfect for a casual, social dining experience.
  • Focus on Northern Chinese Specialties: Unlike many generic Chinese restaurants, Dunhuang hones in on a specific regional cuisine, offering dishes like Fried Lamb With Cumin and Braised Lamb Shoulder. This specialization guarantees an authentic and high-quality culinary journey.

The focus on hand-pulled noodles and lamb dishes sets it apart from other Chinese eateries in the city, offering a taste of a less-common but incredibly rich regional cuisine. While the prices may be a little higher than average, they are considered fair given the quality of the food and the prime Manhattan location. The portions, while not always massive, are flavorful and satisfying. The trending atmosphere and attentive service add to the overall positive experience.
