Grand Shanghai House is strategically located at 9 Pell Street, New York, NY 10013, USA. This address places it on one of Chinatown’s most historic and character-filled streets, known for its unique architecture and bustling energy. Pell Street is a quintessential part of the neighborhood, offering a more intimate and traditional feel compared to the larger, more commercial avenues. The restaurant's location is a key part of its appeal, providing an authentic setting for an authentic meal.
Accessibility is a major advantage of dining in this area of New York City. Grand Shanghai House is just a short walk from several major subway stations. The Canal Street station, which serves the N, Q, R, W, J, Z, 6, and 4 trains, is a hub of connectivity, making the restaurant easily reachable from almost any part of Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens. While the area can be busy, the walkability of the neighborhood and the ease of public transportation mean that finding a parking spot is not a primary concern for most New Yorkers. The location is perfect for those who want to experience a truly local dining spot without having to venture far from the city's main transit lines.

For a New Yorker in search of a truly authentic and satisfying Chinese meal, Grand Shanghai House is a name worth knowing. The main reason to choose this establishment is, without a doubt, the quality of its food. The reputation of its soup dumplings, in particular, has made it a destination for those who appreciate the art of this classic dish. It offers a taste of the well-loved flavors from its former occupant but with the added benefit of a more accessible, walk-in friendly experience. The fact that the same chef is rumored to have been involved is a strong endorsement of the culinary consistency.
Furthermore, the restaurant’s commitment to excellent service is a major selling point. In a city where dining can sometimes feel impersonal, Grand Shanghai House stood out for its attentive and accommodating staff. This combination of great food and great service creates a memorable experience that makes diners want to return again and again. While the cash-only policy may require a bit of preparation, it is a small trade-off for the delicious and authentic meal that awaits. The family-friendly environment also makes it a perfect choice for casual outings with loved ones.
In essence, Grand Shanghai House is a testament to the idea that great food speaks for itself. It has built a loyal following based on the strength of its menu and the quality of its execution. For those who value authentic flavors, a comfortable setting, and the simple pleasure of a perfectly made dumpling, Grand Shanghai House is a destination to look forward to visiting again once it reopens its doors.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The former location of Joe's Shanghai, this place had a lot to live up to. Short answer is yes, soup dumplings are delicious! Many other dishes are flavorful and delicious including the shumai and crispy pork chops.
December 28 · Tim HandIs this Joe’s Shanghai? No it is not.Joe’s moved to a newer larger location and the prices reflect that.Is this place serving the same soup dumplings and scallion pancakes we know and loved? Yes it is.Supposedly the chef is the same. Based on my experience last night, I would not be surprised. For all you former Joe’s lovers, this is honestly a good thing. It’s the same soup dumplings except now you can walk in and be seated right away because the name changed.Service was awesome. There was a small issue with one of our orders but the servers more than made up for it. Absolutely would recommend.
January 04 · Dom ABest soup dumplings I've ever had - we have ALL had - and I take all out of town guests there - fancy and non fancy people ;) We know our soup dumplings and this is EPICENJOY!!!!!Great service too. :)
December 27 · Jacqui Cacanthe soup dumpling is exactly same with Joe shanghai because one of my friend is partner of this restaurant. he said the main chef from joe shanghai is working in here. and the yangzhou fries rice is amazing.
January 03 · haoyi luNot the same! The lady out front telling everyone it’s the same and it’s not. Go to the other location “the real one!!! 46 Bowery.. me and my partner and some friends from out of town came here and it was just greasy and really had no taste. We asked for water like 6 times and they just nodded and walked away so we had no drinks at all the entire meal, yet the people a crossed from us got tea and water right when they sat down, and! We kept asking for the rice and they would just nod and walk away so we didn’t get rice that we ordered. But when we asked if it was the same they said yes “same owners and chef” but the taste of the food said otherwise. So I’m not a fan of lying to people to get them to eat at your place let alone terrible service. Just tell the truth, it’s not the same. And that’s sad you have to lie to people to get them to eat at your place
