Such a cute little café and honestly, the fact that everything is homemade makes it an incredible deal. It’s also a hidden gem tucked away in a Chinatown food court, which keeps the price on a very reasonable deal, I’m pretty sure if this place were in Midtown or SoHo, it would easily cost twice, that’s why I feel like such a find to stumbled into their stand and tried their Sunflower Parfait at a Japanese market and loved it so much, and tracked down their actual café to try more.Got the Cloud Matcha this time, and it was so refreshing and delicious. They also serve snacks, so I couldn’t resist getting the takoyaki and yep, it was super tasty too.The café is run by the owner herself, who is an absolute sweetheart, so friendly and kind. With good vibes, great food, and such warm service, this place is definitely going to become one of my favorite spots. - Jazz Chomboon

Himawari Introduce

A Sweet Escape in the Heart of the East Village

New York City's culinary landscape is constantly evolving, but some of the most memorable spots are the ones that feel like a personal discovery.

Himawari, a charming and trendy Japanese-inspired dessert shop, is one such place. Originally gaining a following as a beloved stand in a Chinatown food court, this "hidden gem" has since made its home on a bustling stretch of First Avenue in the East Village. What makes Himawari so special is its commitment to quality and authenticity. As one reviewer noted, the fact that "everything is homemade makes it an incredible deal," providing a level of care and freshness that is a rare find. The shop offers a focused yet impressive menu of delightful desserts and unique beverages that cater to locals and visitors alike. With its casual atmosphere and a reputation for warm service from the owner herself, Himawari is quickly becoming a favorite spot for those seeking a quick, delicious, and wholesome treat in the heart of the city.

Features and Highlights

Himawari's charm and growing popularity stem from a variety of features that set it apart in the competitive New York dessert scene.

  • Homemade Quality: One of the most significant highlights, as noted by a reviewer, is that everything is homemade. This commitment to fresh, from-scratch ingredients ensures a high-quality product that feels both authentic and special, elevating the experience beyond that of a typical dessert shop.
  • Unique Japanese-Inspired Menu: Himawari offers a unique culinary focus, specializing in Japanese-inspired desserts and beverages. The menu goes beyond the standard fare, featuring items like Daifuku and a variety of matcha and hojicha-based drinks that are both trendy and delicious. The menu also includes savory snacks like takoyaki, providing a nice balance.
  • Warm and Friendly Service: The café is run by the owner herself, who is described as "an absolute sweetheart, so friendly and kind." This level of personal, warm service creates a welcoming atmosphere and makes every customer feel valued. The "good vibes" and "warm service" are a key reason why it's poised to become a favorite spot for many.
  • Reasonable Pricing: For the quality and handmade nature of its products, the pricing at Himawari is considered "a very reasonable deal." As one reviewer pointed out, the same items would likely cost twice as much in a different part of the city, making it a true find for value-conscious New Yorkers.
  • Kid-Friendly: The café is a great spot for kids, making it a good option for families looking for a sweet treat. The simple and delicious offerings appeal to a wide age range.

What is Worth Choosing at Himawari?

The menu at Himawari, though concise, is a carefully curated selection of deliciousness. The café’s offerings are a testament to the fact that quality is far more important than quantity.

The desserts are the undeniable highlight. The Parfait is a star attraction, with one reviewer specifically mentioning the Sunflower Parfait as an incredible find that made them "track down their actual café to try more." The parfait is a layered masterpiece, combining different textures and flavors for a delightful and refreshing treat that is perfect for a quick indulgence. The Daifuku Set of 3 is another must-try. Daifuku, a traditional Japanese confection consisting of a small round mochi stuffed with a sweet filling, is a perfectly balanced dessert. The homemade quality ensures a fresh and authentic taste that is a rare treat.

The drinks menu is just as impressive as the desserts. Himawari is a destination for lovers of matcha and hojicha. The Iced Strawberry Matcha, as a reviewer noted, is "excellent" and a refreshing choice on a hot day. The Cloud Matcha is another fan favorite, praised for being "so refreshing and delicious." The café also offers a variety of other unique and flavorful options, such as the Yuzu Matcha Soda, which provides a zesty, bubbly twist on the traditional matcha flavor, and the Hojicha Latte, a comforting and nutty option.

However, it is also important to note a review that, while praising the drink's taste, highlighted a critical service issue regarding a milk preference. The customer appreciated the owner's acknowledgment but emphasized the vital importance of attention to detail, especially when dietary intolerances or allergies are involved. This feedback underscores the café’s potential for growth in service while reinforcing the customer's loyalty despite the error. It's a reminder that every business, no matter how beloved, has room for improvement.

Beyond the sweet items, Himawari also offers a small selection of snacks, with one reviewer noting that the takoyaki was "super tasty." This provides a nice savory counterpoint to the sweetness of the desserts and drinks, showing the café’s versatility as a spot for a light snack or a full dessert experience.

Ultimately, Himawari is more than just a dessert shop; it is a charming and personal experience. With its homemade quality, unique Japanese-inspired menu, and a truly welcoming atmosphere, it stands out as a genuine local favorite in the East Village. It's the kind of hidden gem that New Yorkers love to discover and share with their friends.
