What is worth choosing
Lou Yau Kee is more than just another restaurant; it’s a culinary experience well worth seeking out in New York City. The primary reason to choose this establishment is its unwavering commitment to authenticity and quality, particularly with its signature dishes. The Hainanese chicken rice, available in both poached and roasted varieties, is often described by customers as the best they've had in the U.S. This is a significant claim, given the dish's popularity and the high standards of food lovers. The chicken is consistently praised for being incredibly tender and succulent, a mark of meticulous preparation. Whether you opt for the classic poached version, celebrated for its delicate, silky texture, or the roasted chicken, which bursts with rich soy flavor, you are in for a treat. Customers have also noted that while the poached chicken is a divine choice for purists, the roasted version is often a surprising star of the show. The flavors are well-balanced and satisfying, and the accompanying fragrant rice is the perfect canvas for the savory chicken. Beyond the main attraction, the menu offers other delights that are equally worth exploring. The shredded chicken porridge is a comforting and nourishing option, while the piping hot Laksa has been lauded as one of the best in the city, with a perfect balance of spice and richness. The attention to detail extends to the sauces, with the red chili sauce earning a special mention for its sublime, flawless flavor. This makes the meal not just about the chicken, but about a symphony of tastes that come together perfectly. The quick and efficient service means you can enjoy a high-quality meal even on a tight schedule, and the casual, welcoming atmosphere makes it suitable for any occasion, from a solo lunch to a gathering with friends. The fact that it's a popular spot for lunch, dinner, and even solo dining speaks volumes about its broad appeal. In a city where quality and time are of the essence, Lou Yau Kee delivers on both fronts, providing an authentic and satisfying taste of Asian comfort food that is truly a cut above the rest. Its reputation, built on word-of-mouth and glowing reviews, is a testament to the exceptional food and service it provides, making it a must-visit destination for anyone in New York looking for an authentic and delicious meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The Hainanese chicken rice is nice. And the chicken is tender. Also, got the roasted chicken. Just as tender. Of course, the Hainanese chicken rice stall in Singapore, on average, are better than Lau Yau Kee. But we are in the US. Guess this is as good as it gets stateside.
February 04 · David GnGot the inside track on Lou Yau Kee thanks to people I love being friends with the owner, and, well, let's just say they deserve every bit of hype they've gotten. It's sad so many people had to discover them through Eater, but better late than never, I guess.Yes, the Poached Chicken is divine for all you Hainan chicken lovers, but the real star of the show is the silky, delectable Roasted Chicken, bursting with soy glory. The Lemon Chicken was crisp and tasty (though not my general cup of tea), while the piping hot Laksa was one of the best I've had (including from two trips to Malaysia). I might be slightly biased on these last two items though, as we got them for free, haha.Oh and the red chili sauce is what I imagine God's chili sauce tastes like. Perfection.
July 10 · Josephine LeeBest roasted chicken I've ever had in NYC. The roasted chicken (5/5) is intensely moist, and soft. The poached chicken is equally delicious (5/5). The sauces they also give you are absolutely scrumptious as well. The greens are also very well cooked and tasty. Highly recommend!
July 17 · Christi BalakiLocated in a food court, Lou Yau Kee dishes out delicious and healthy food at an affordable price. The Food: The chick is the start and it is succulent and flavorful. The rice, yu choy, and cabbage soup were all great as well. The sauces were also fantastic, much better than some that I've had at other places. The Service: Efficient and friendly. They are student friendly and offer a nice discount - a good deal for the students, especially for NYC.The Atmosphere: It's a food court, a bit hip but nothing over the top. I like that you can see the chicken in the window and you can watch them prepare it.The Atmosphere:
August 10 · Quintin CoppolaOne of the best meals I’ve had in a while. I had the mixed chicken rice. It was really good. It was a little under $20 but I think it’s worth it. Big portions and very filling. Everything was cooked perfectly. I’m definitely coming back that’s for sure. Highly recommend!
