Mamoun's Falafel Introduce
In a city with a constantly evolving dining landscape, some places stand the test of time, becoming more than just a restaurant—they become a New York City institution. Mamoun's Falafel, located on the iconic MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village, is a perfect example. Since 1971, this family-owned and operated eatery has been a go-to spot for locals, college students, and tourists alike, all drawn in by the promise of fresh, authentic, and incredibly satisfying Middle Eastern cuisine. It's a place that has been serving up its legendary falafel for over fifty years, solidifying its reputation as one of the oldest and most beloved falafel restaurants in the country.
Mamoun's Falafel is all about a straightforward menu executed to perfection. The star of the show, of course, is the falafel. Made from finely ground chickpeas, onions, parsley, garlic, and spices, these deep-fried delights are consistently praised for their crispy exterior and flavorful, tender interior. But the menu offers much more than just falafel. The shawarma and chicken kebobs are also customer favorites, served in a pita pocket or on a plate with your choice of seasoned rice or a fresh salad. Each dish is a celebration of classic Middle Eastern flavors, served with the restaurant's signature tahineh, garlic, or hot sauces.
One of the most appealing aspects of Mamoun's is its no-frills, fast-paced service. The food is made quickly, making it a perfect spot for a quick bite during a busy day or for a late-night craving. This fast-casual approach doesn't compromise on quality; the food is always made from scratch using traditional recipes and quality, Halal-certified ingredients. The atmosphere is casual and trendy, with a constant buzz of people coming and going. It’s a place that feels like a true slice of New York life, a destination that's both a quick stop and a place that holds great memories for those who have been coming for years.
Mamoun's commitment to quality extends beyond its main dishes. The sides are just as delicious and authentic, including creamy hummus, savory baba ganouj, crispy pita chips, and fresh tabbouleh. The variety of specialty drinks, like the refreshing Mint Lemonade and Tamarind juice, provides the perfect complement to the rich and savory flavors of the food. Mamoun's is also a champion of dietary diversity, with a wide array of vegetarian, vegan, and healthy options available, making it a welcoming place for everyone.
While some long-time patrons may note subtle changes over the years, the core experience of Mamoun's remains the same: a legendary spot serving up delicious, authentic food in an unpretentious setting. It's a place that has been a staple of the Greenwich Village community for generations, and its reputation as a must-visit destination for authentic Middle Eastern food is well-deserved.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Said to be the best Falafel in New York and it certainly did not disappoint. I am not too much of a fan of falafel, but this is pretty good. The sauce is a little bit too sour to my taste.
July 22 · Liang HuangBeen coming to this location for many years. Absolutely delicious food and the atmosphere brings back great memories. But lately I have noticed things are definitely changing. They got rid of their original homemade lentil soup. They now serve some ready made soup instead. Definitely not the same experience.Last time I was there, they were all out of shawarma and lamb kebab. They only had falafel, kofta and chicken kebab, at 9pm!I’ve been to this place hundreds if not thousands of times, never have I seen them be out of any kind of dish. It’s not the end of the world but when you take a long trip for over an hour to grab some good old shawarma sandwiches just to find out that they’re all out, it’s disappointing.I have been to some of their other locations but nothing beats an original location. I hope they bring back some of the old experience and continue to keep this place great as it always has been.
July 30 · M KStraight up solid falafel and shawarma pitas. The falafel is light and delicious and the shawarma is browned and savory. Hummus is smooth as butter. Hot peppers, spice, tahini makes the flavor POP.1 or 1 tables inside, so be prepared to sit outside at one of their covered tables.
July 04 · Angela Cooperman-GalperOne of the best meals I had in NYC AND it was the cheapest! Mind blown!Thank you yelp & google for steering me to Mamoun’s! Just a tiny hole in the wall falafel place near NYU with tons of veggies options. I opted for a plate & my husband got a sandwich and we both crushed our lunches! So fresh, tasty, authentic, and wholesome. And I can’t believe all this food totaled to $17!(FYI they are cash only)1000% recommend esp if you are vegetarian
March 15 · Alicia HoganAmazing and generous falafel sandwich, very well priced too. The cashier at the counter accepted to put my order into my container :).However please put in place the compost and recycling bins. There is only a bin for landfill. This would make a massive difference for your business as well if you had a bin for the compost in your place and encourage people to put their plates, napkins and food leftovers there! We can reduce waste all together.
