Sammy's Roumanian Steak House Introduce
In a city filled with endless dining options, some places stand out for their history, character, and ability to create a truly unforgettable experience. Sammy's Roumanian Steak House is one of those legendary institutions. After a temporary closure, this classic New York restaurant has reopened in a new location in the Lower East Side, bringing with it all the quirky charm and old-world magic that made it a beloved landmark. More than just a steakhouse, Sammy's is a cultural and culinary experience that transports you back in time, offering a taste of Jewish-style comfort food and a lively, festive atmosphere. It's a place where the food is just one part of the show, and the memories you make are as rich as the chopped liver.
The atmosphere at Sammy's is what truly sets it apart. It’s a unique blend of cozy, historic, and trendy, creating an environment that feels both casual and special. A customer review perfectly captures this sentiment, describing the new location as "retaining its old world quirky charm." This isn't a quiet, formal steakhouse; it's a vibrant, communal space where groups and tourists come to have fun. The highlight is undoubtedly the live music, which hasn't changed from its original format and adds a lively, celebratory soundtrack to your meal. The vibe is what makes Sammy's an "experience," as noted by a reviewer who recommended going for the atmosphere alone. It's a must-visit for anyone looking for a dinner that is more than just a meal—it's a night of entertainment and great company.
While the focus is on the experience, the food at Sammy’s Roumanian Steak House is a key part of its enduring appeal. The menu is a tribute to classic Jewish comfort food, with dishes that are hearty, flavorful, and satisfying. The chopped liver is a particular standout, praised by multiple customers as being "delicious." The steak, the centerpiece of the meal, is consistently described as "perfect." While the food may not be described as "amazing" by every reviewer, it is consistently praised as being fine and reliable, with a few dishes standing out as exceptional. The restaurant is not a place for vegetarians, as one reviewer noted, but for meat-eaters, it's a true paradise of classic, no-frills, delicious fare.
Beyond the main courses, Sammy’s offers unique and memorable menu items that add to its legendary status. The famous container of chicken fat on every table is a unique touch that speaks to the restaurant’s old-world roots. For a unique drink experience, you can order a bottle of Vodka that comes in a block of ice with cranberry juice and soda on the side. The meal can be finished with a perfect egg cream, a classic dessert that you can make yourself, adding a fun, interactive element to the end of your night. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a classic New York restaurant that closed during covid and reopened in a new space in the LES retaining its old world quirky charm. The live music hasn't changed, nor has the food. The Friday night prix fixe was delicious. There is still a container of chicken fat on every table and you can order a bottle of Vodka that comes in a block of ice with cranberry juice and soda on the side. The chopped liver is still delicious and the steak was perfect. Not a place for vegetarians at all but if you are a meat eater who loves Jewish style food this place is a must. Finish your meal with a perfect egg cream.
April 07 · Michael LehrmanSammy’s is an experience. I would recommend going for that alone. It was only OK for me, but everyone is different and there were lots of people having fun. The food was fine. Nothing to call out special but nothing bad either. The liver was probably my favorite.
January 31 · Chris CurryLove love love this place. It’s an experience unlike no other. Come with a crowd! The portions are huge and the food is home style delicious. And the entertainment..get ready to laugh, sing along, dance - music and comedy reigns with Dani Luv, the house entertainer! Come have a blast! I’m so happy Sammy’s reopened, there’s no other joint quite like it.
July 14 · Monique SmithThe steak was so big it was served folded in half on the plate. The frozen vodka came in a full drinking glass. We stayed for an extra hour drinking, dancing, and eating an entire bowl of half-sour pickles
June 24 · nshallerGood food though pricey. Particularly liked the chopped liver. Very loud. Entertainment can be a little off color.
