SANKU MAOTS'AI 三顾冒菜 Introduce
In a city celebrated for its endless culinary diversity, SANKU MAOTS'AI 三顾冒菜 brings a truly unique and authentic taste of Chinese cuisine to the East Village. This restaurant specializes in "maocai," a beloved Sichuan comfort food that is often described as a personal hot pot. Unlike the traditional hot pot experience where you cook your own food at the table, maocai involves selecting your preferred ingredients from a wide array of options, which are then expertly braised in a flavorful broth by the kitchen and served to you ready to eat. This concept offers the same rich, customizable experience of hot pot with the added convenience of a ready-to-eat meal, making it perfect for a quick and satisfying lunch or dinner.
SANKU MAOTS'AI has been a highly anticipated addition to the New York food scene, and for good reason. As patrons have pointed out, it's a refreshing alternative to some of the more "gentrified" versions of similar dishes found in the city. The restaurant is part of a larger chain with numerous locations in China, a testament to its authenticity and popularity. The East Village location lives up to its reputation by offering a truly expansive and diverse selection of fresh ingredients, from various meats and vegetables to tofu and mushrooms. This allows for an endless number of combinations, ensuring that every visit can be a new and exciting culinary adventure.
The dining experience at SANKU MAOTS'AI is designed to be both fun and comfortable. The space is noted for being super clean, bright, and spacious, a pleasant surprise for a city restaurant. The staff is consistently described as friendly, helpful, and kind, walking customers through the process of building their perfect bowl and answering any questions. This combination of authentic, delicious food, a pleasant environment, and excellent service makes SANKU MAOTS'AI a standout destination for anyone craving a taste of genuine Sichuan cuisine.
SANKU MAOTS'AI is conveniently located at 167 1st Ave, New York, NY 10003, in the heart of the East Village. This puts it in a vibrant and easily accessible area with a lot of foot traffic. For those driving, paid street parking is available, though it can be competitive in the neighborhood. The most worthwhile choice at SANKU MAOTS'AI is to embrace the full DIY experience. The process is simple: you grab a bowl, select your favorite ingredients by the pound, and then choose your desired broth. For first-timers, the classic Spicy Szechuan broth comes highly recommended by patrons for its delicious and fresh flavor. For those who might not prefer spicy food, there are also options like the Tomato broth, which a reviewer already plans to try on a future visit. The dry mix option with spicy sesame sauce is also a popular choice for those who want a bowl without a broth base.
As for ingredients, the variety is vast. You can build your bowl with everything from beef and shrimp to more adventurous items like tripe and chicken feet. For vegetarians, the selection of mushrooms, tofu, and other vegetables is extensive and impressive. It’s a great opportunity to be creative and build a meal that is perfectly tailored to your tastes. The restaurant also offers pre-set "Special Packages" for those who prefer a curated option, such as the Deluxe Seafood Set Meal or the Vegetable Combo. To complete your meal, consider adding a side dish like the Sanku Crispy Pork or Lychee Shrimp Balls, which add a delicious textural contrast to the main dish. And for dessert, the Icy Jelly With Brown Sugar Syrup is a perfect way to cool down after a spicy meal. The combination of a fun, customizable process, authentic flavors, and fresh ingredients makes SANKU MAOTS'AI a truly special and worthwhile dining destination in New York City.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I’ve been so excited to try this place. I finally went and was blown away. It’s super clean, and everyone is very friendly and helpful. The food is so delicious and fresh. The spicy Szechuan broth was delicious. The staff gave me a beautiful to-go container and a fancy leftover bag. It’s a must-try. This was such a fun and delightful dining experience.
August 23 · Kathryn RossiI’m so so so excited that there is a dry pot / hot pot place in the area!!! The gentrification of dry pot with Mala Project is too real - this restaurant supposedly has tons of locations in China. It’s priced at $17.99 a pound ($3.99 per 100 grams) and you get to pick whatever you want into a bowl and then chose your broth, and they cook it for you. I’m very pleasantly surprised at the diversity of the offerings - many kinds of beef, chicken, fish, shrimp, tripe, chicken feet, quail egg, 3 kinds of mushrooms, veggies, tofu, and stuff I wouldn’t even normally get but the options are amazing.I got a dry broth less option this time, with mild spice I was able to chose. It was delicious and they ask you if you want white rice or not. It was so so so good, and mine weighed just about a pound. I appreciate that they take off the weight of the basket when weighing. I didn’t love the ice pudding - it was a bit too sweet for me but good for cooling down spice, generally speaking. There’s plenty of seating and it’s very comfortable and bright and spacious. I love that they have the tissue packets just like in Asia. The service was also really good, the staff is super helpful and kind and walks you through the process and answers any questions.Next time I will definitely get the tomato broth, and try the sauce station!
August 10 · Anna DThe food here is really good! I come here and try the SICHUAN broth. It’s spicy but I can’t stop eating it! Nice meal! I also saw they offer rich tomato broth. I wanna try next time!
June 14 · Qinglin ZengClean store, friendly staff, fresh food.Spicy broth not spicy enough( I ordered medium spicy but felt nothing).Good but pretty expensive tho, I guess the rent is high that’s why!
July 05 · Samantha YuanLove this place! Ingredients are great and the broth is amazing! I like spicy sezchuan food so this place delivers! The bright yellow color makes for a cheerful dining experience. Brings me back to Asia.
