Smithereens Introduce
In the vibrant and ever-evolving East Village, Smithereens stands out as a unique and refreshing addition to the New York City dining scene. This American restaurant, with a distinct New England sensibility, is not your typical seafood joint. Instead, it offers a sophisticated and modern take on the flavors and traditions of the Northeast. Helmed by Chef Nick Tamburo and beverage director Nikita Malhotra, both with impressive backgrounds from acclaimed establishments like Momofuku Ko, Smithereens has quickly become a destination for those seeking a thoughtful and expertly executed meal. The atmosphere is a perfect blend of cozy and trendy, creating a welcoming space that is ideal for a date night, a solo dining experience, or a get-together with friends. While the ambiance is casual, the food is nothing short of excellent, with every dish being "well-executed and worth the hype," as one reviewer noted.
### Location and Accessibility
Smithereens is located at 414 E 9th St, New York, NY 10009, USA. This address places it in a charming and quieter part of the East Village. The restaurant's location in a subterranean space adds to its cozy, tavern-like feel. While it might be tucked away, it is still conveniently accessible by public transportation, with several subway stations nearby. For those driving, paid street parking is available, but as is common in the city, finding a spot can be a challenge. The restaurant is an intimate space, and while a Michelin Guide review notes that tables are close together, it also adds to the lively and electric vibe. For a truly immersive experience, a seat at the chef's counter is highly recommended, offering a direct view into the creative kitchen.
### Services Offered
Smithereens provides a refined dining experience with a few key services tailored to its unique offerings.
- Dine-in: This is the primary service option, with a focus on providing a full, immersive table service experience. Reservations are highly recommended for dinner, especially on weekends, and can be made through platforms like Resy. The restaurant holds some space for walk-ins at specific seating times.
- Table Service: The dining experience is centered around attentive table service. While one reviewer had a negative experience, others praise the "wonderful" service and the staff's ability to recommend dishes and wine pairings.
- Bar Onsite: The restaurant features a full bar with an impressive selection of alcohol, beer, cocktails, and hard liquor. The beverage program is a highlight, with a constantly changing wine list that complements the seafood-centric menu.
### Features & Highlights
Smithereens distinguishes itself through a number of key features that make it a standout destination.
- Unique New England-Inspired Cuisine: The menu is a celebration of the flavors and ingredients of the Northeast. Chef Tamburo's unique and sophisticated approach to seafood sets it apart. The dishes feature inventive flavor combinations, such as "Tuna with Cherry Blossom & Pear" and "Scallop with Matsutake & Almond."
- Inventive Beverage Program: The drink menu, curated by Nikita Malhotra, is a major highlight. It focuses on bright, high-acidity white wines that perfectly pair with the food. The cocktail menu also features unique concoctions, including some with a nod to New England tradition.
- A Focus on Quality Ingredients: The restaurant is committed to sourcing the best products from the Northeast and beyond. This dedication to quality is evident in every dish, from the fresh seafood to the expertly prepared vegetables.
- Creative Dessert Program: The dessert menu is anything but ordinary. It features unconventional items like "Celery Ice Cream Float" and a "Blueberry Donut" that has a delicious balance of sweet and tart.
### What is Worth Choosing
The menu at Smithereens is constantly evolving with the seasons, but there are a few standout dishes that come highly recommended by diners. The "Anadama Bread & Seaweed Butter" is a must-order. A New England tradition with a twist, the bread is described as "really good," and the seaweed butter is "very delicate and still very good." Another dish that is "not to be missed" is the "Buckwheat Pancake On Smoked Bluefish." Customers have raved about this dish, with one calling it "outstanding." The "Scallop with Matsutake & Almond" is also a fan favorite, praised for its unique and delicious flavor profile.
For main courses, the "Lobster Roll" is a popular choice, described as "amazing." Another standout is the "Hake & Dams," with one review noting that this "essential dish" is a highlight. The "Bbq Monkfish Tail With Sweet Potato" is also a great option, known for its dense, meaty texture and nice cooking. The dessert menu, while "very different," offers some gems. The "Celery Ice Cream Float" is described as "really fun" and a "brilliant signature finale." The "Blueberry Donut" has a unique sweet and tart flavor that many find delicious. While some dishes may be a bit of a gamble, as one review pointed out with the "truffle fries" and a "monkfish" dish being "extremely salty," the overall consensus is that the food at Smithereens is exceptional. The quality of the food is so high that even a customer who had a disappointing service experience said they would "love to return, for the food that was too good to pass."

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1First of all, the food was excellent. Every dish was well executed and worth the hype. However, our server made our visit quite unpleasant. We opted for the beverage pairings, on the menu it writes it includes 5 pours in total. By the time we finished all the savory courses, our sever came over to ask if we wanted desserts and drinks. The way he put it sounded like the drinks would be extra cost, so I said no at first, but my partner asked to clarify if it’s included in the pairings? He then said “It is included, we aren’t stingy. We just don’t have many dessert wine options, but we are always happy to pour something fun for you to try.”At the end of the meal, he brought us the check, we asked again about the pairing as we total only had 4 drinks each not 5 (not generous pours, either), our server responded: “So you think you are owed one more drink?” We were nice about it but were absolutely stunned by how he dealt with the situation. His tone may sound alright but his choice of words really rubbed us the wrong way.I would love to return, for the food that was too good to pass but this experience was simply disappointing.Side note, it was my birthday celebration and we put in a note when making a res. However, we got zero gesture about it. Right at the time I thought maybe they just don’t do celebrations, a couple at the counter were treated with champagne for their anniversary and a table in the back was congratulated with a comp dessert… it’s normally not important to us but seeing others get it but not us just feels weird.
August 16 · Kaden LeeSuch a lovely and unique restaurant! The service was wonderful and we tried a bunch of small plates. The bread with seaweed butter and the buckwheat pancake with smoke fish are not to be missed! We also loved the scallop with white asparagus and a dish with raw fish, peas and horseradish (I can't remember the fish). I really enjoyed the unique seafood preparations and flavor combinations. The dessert program is also very different. I love celery so had to get the celery float which was really fun. The apple cider donut was also a surprise, it had maybe citric acid in the sugar dusting? Every bite was a little sweet and a little tart, delicious. My only complaint was that the space is quite loud
May 11 · Alex WileyOkay amazing experience here. Me and my best girl friend came here on our weekly dinner night out. Found this place through the Infatuation app.All plates are shareable sizes yet small, so don’t expect to walk away stuffed— in the best way. Everything was light, super fresh, different and delicious. The flavor combinations of each plate packed a punch. We also asked for a wine connoisseur who recommended a fabulous bottle of goth red wine from Germany. We were so happy with our experience. It’s definitely a date night vibe.
June 25 · Rachel FaethSuch fun and unexpected food. We had only 3 dishes: fish head terrine, lentils with eel and whole mackerel. Great preparation and seasoning. Didn’t go for any of the limited dessert offerings. Space is rather dull. Staff and server were delightful. Recommend thus restaurant for adventurous pescatarians
July 25 · Jeffrey MenzerYou can’t really tell by the photos, but the flavors are so exciting! Their dessert blew my mind, we had Mille-feuille type of dessert but with candied seaweed instead of pastry and black sesame cream. I was amazed how well these flavors go together.
