For the ultimate experience, the Omakase is the star of the show. With options like the 15-course and 18-course meals, it is a journey through a symphony of flavors and textures. The chefs are not just preparing food; they are crafting a story, with each piece of sushi presented with care and explained in detail. This educational and interactive element is a major highlight, as one reviewer mentioned, "chef will talk with u through the whole meal and had incredible attention to detail." The quality of the fish is consistently praised as "very fresh and expertly prepared."
Beyond the omakase, the a la carte offerings are of equally high quality. The Maki rolls are a great choice for those who prefer a more classic approach, with options like the Negitoro Roll and King California Roll standing out. For a different but equally satisfying meal, the Makoto Chirashi Don is a beautiful bowl of assorted sashimi over rice, a perfect representation of the freshness and variety of their fish.
Finally, the beverage program at Sushi Makoto is a destination in itself. The extensive Sake list includes rare and high-end selections like Dassai Beyond 720 Ml, a testament to their commitment to providing a full, authentic Japanese dining experience. The ability to choose a Sake Pairing with your omakase is a fantastic opportunity to enhance the flavors of each course. The combination of a world-class culinary experience, unparalleled service, and a beautiful, inclusive atmosphere makes Sushi Makoto a standout among Japanese restaurants in New York City and well worth a visit.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Very good Omakase at NYC. We order the 18-course and add a lot for our dinner. The fish is flown in from Japan. It was very fresh and expertly prepared. chef will talk with u through the whole meal and had incredible attention to detail. There will have a book for the fish texture and flavor. Have good service at all.
July 29 · Jing DiaoTraditional Omikase (chef's choice) Sushi experience with some of the best food we've had in NYC. We had the 15-course meals with a couple add-ons at the end of our dinner. The fish is flown in from Japan. It was very fresh and expertly prepared. Our chef led us through the whole meal and had incredible attention to detail. He quickly noticed that I'm left-handed and presented the pieces of sushi opposite of how it would be placed for a right-handed person. We were blown away with the service and quality of the meal.
June 24 · Reed FabekSushi Makoto was a very fresh experience. The selection of fish was standard but the other appetizers and dishes were unique. The vibe is awesome— with a little more intimacy than some other omakase spots in the city. As well, for the price point, the value here is great. I’ve paid more for less in the city and it feels like these days it’s hard to find “good” omakase for under $200 PP. Corkage fee is very reasonable, and their sake cooling decide is almost worth a visit in itself! My only quarrel is that it took some time to get seated, for a reservation at 7, a lot of the guests from earlier were still dining and we weren’t sat until closer to 7:20. Which isn’t the end of the world, but something to perhaps note from a business side. Lastly, I would’ve liked to be offered more at the end of the meal instead of being given the cheque. Perhaps that’s standard protocol but it was not offered to us our evening there.Regardless, amazing experience. Truly loved this spot.
October 22 · Jeremy RhoThe 15-course omakase we experienced was nothing short of extraordinary—easily the best we’ve ever had. While the service was impeccable (a solid 10/10), the food truly stole the show. Each bite was thoughtfully crafted and left us eager for the next, with every course blending seamlessly into the next.Standout dishes? The liver we began with, the aged tuna, the uni, and that incredible cardamom soup. Every element was unforgettable.Chef Ryan’s attention to detail made the experience even more special—he explained each dish with care, adding a personal touch that enhanced the meal. This was more than dinner; it was an unforgettable culinary journey, and I can’t wait to return.
December 29 · Sazeen ZamanThe omakase offers a nice variety of fish, and I appreciated the little pamphlet with descriptions. However, a few things took away from the experience: the restroom could use a bit more attention, there were fruit flies hovering on the table, and the wasabi was a bit overpowering. The chef was kind, but overall, the quality didn’t quite feel worth the $200+ per person.
