Texas Star Introduce
For New Yorkers in Harlem, Texas Star is far more than just a breakfast or hamburger restaurant—it’s an institution. A true neighborhood fixture on St Nicholas Avenue, this unpretentious eatery has been a dependable source of classic comfort food for decades. Known for its all-day breakfast platters and a wide selection of burgers, Texas Star has built a loyal following among locals who appreciate its straightforward approach and consistent quality. This is a place that thrives on simplicity and efficiency, providing delicious and hearty meals that are perfect for a quick bite or a satisfying solo meal.
The essence of Texas Star is captured in its no-frills, community-oriented approach. It’s a place where the focus is strictly on the food, prepared by a small but dedicated crew who, as one customer noted, do everything well. The menu is packed with classic options that feel familiar and comforting, from a variety of omelettes to a wide range of burgers. The restaurant's reputation is built on its timeless appeal and its role as a "dining pit" that holds precious memories for its patrons. It's the kind of place that embodies the spirit of a true neighborhood staple, serving the community for nearly four decades with the same dedication and quality that made it a local legend.
Texas Star is located at 741 St Nicholas Ave, New York, NY 10031, USA. Its location on St Nicholas Avenue places it in a prime spot in the Hamilton Heights area of Harlem. One of its most notable features is its proximity to the West 145th Street subway station, with a reviewer specifically mentioning it’s "next to the 148th street subway entrance." This makes it incredibly accessible for commuters and residents who rely on public transportation. For those who prefer to drive, the area offers street parking, though it is not specified whether it is paid or free. The easy access to a major subway line is a significant advantage, solidifying its status as a convenient and essential stop for a quick meal before or after a commute.
The neighborhood around Texas Star is bustling and full of life, and the restaurant’s location allows it to serve a consistent stream of foot traffic. Its spot adjacent to the subway entrance ensures that it's a constant presence in the daily lives of many in the community. While the restaurant itself is a walk-up, takeout-focused spot, its physical location is a key part of its business model. It's a place you can quickly duck into for a meal, and its position on a main avenue makes it easy to find. This practicality and central location are a big part of why it has remained a fixture in the area for so long, serving as a reliable landmark for locals.
Texas Star operates with a simple and highly effective service model, centered on speed and convenience.
- Takeout: This is the primary service option. As noted by a customer, it is a "takeout only, cash only" establishment. This focus allows the small crew to operate efficiently and get orders out quickly.
- Dine-in: While it is primarily a takeout spot, some customers may choose to consume their food at a counter or nearby. However, the business model is not that of a full sit-down restaurant.
The business's emphasis on a no-frills, takeout-only approach with cash-only payments is a deliberate choice that streamlines its operations and allows it to maintain a fast pace. This model is perfectly suited for the urban environment of New York City, where speed and efficiency are highly valued. By keeping things simple, Texas Star ensures that it can consistently deliver its product to a steady stream of customers, from early morning commuters to late-night locals.
What makes Texas Star a beloved neighborhood spot is its commitment to a few key highlights that have earned it a loyal following over the decades.
- Great Coffee: The restaurant is noted for its great coffee, a crucial offering for a breakfast spot in a city that runs on caffeine.
- All-Day Breakfast: One of its major draws is the availability of breakfast platters all day, which keeps it "in the groove," as one reviewer put it.
- Extensive Breakfast Menu: The menu offers a wide variety of breakfast options, from classic breakfast sandwiches and omelettes to platters with bacon, sausage, and corned beef hash.
- Iconic Burgers: The restaurant's burgers, particularly the "Texas Star" burgers, are legendary among locals and are hailed as some of the best in the area. The menu features a variety of options like the Texan Burger, Mexican Burger, and Bacon Cheeseburger.
- Cash-Only Policy: While this may be a point of consideration for some, the cash-only policy is a notable feature that reinforces its old-school, local-fixture identity.
- Fast Service: Despite being operated by a small crew, the service is typically fast and efficient, a testament to the staff’s dedication and skill.
These features combine to create a uniquely authentic New York experience. The fact that it’s a "cash-only" establishment reinforces its status as a timeless and essential local business. The variety on the menu, particularly the wide range of both breakfast and burger options, ensures that customers can always find something to suit their craving, no matter the time of day. This blend of classic offerings, speed, and genuine community feel is what makes Texas Star such a treasured spot.
For orders and inquiries, you can reach Texas Star at the following contact information. As a cash-only establishment, be sure to have cash ready for your order.
- Address: 741 St Nicholas Ave, New York, NY 10031, USA
- Phone: (212) 926-0133 or +1 212-926-0133
The phone number is the best way to place an order ahead for quick pickup. The direct line of communication is essential for a takeout-focused business, ensuring that customers can place their orders and have them ready when they arrive. This simple and direct contact method is part of the efficient, no-fuss business model that has made Texas Star a local staple for so long. For first-time visitors, the clear contact and address information make it easy to find and try out this beloved neighborhood spot.
What is truly worth choosing at Texas Star is the experience of a timeless neighborhood eatery. The reviews highlight the heartfelt connection customers have with the place, with one reviewer reminiscing about "Steve the original owner" and the "memories" of nearly four decades. The food itself, particularly the "French toast" and "burgers and fries," is praised for its quality and consistency. The reviewer's detailed description of the French fries—"crunchy outside & hot/fluffy inside"—shows that even the simple things are done exceptionally well. Another key point is the value and "fair" pricing, as noted by the customer who recalls when a large order of fries was a "buck fiddy." While prices have changed over the decades, the quality and the sense of community have remained the same. For a taste of classic New York, with a focus on simple, well-made comfort food served by a dedicated crew, Texas Star is a must-try. It's a place that not only serves great food but also holds a piece of local history, and that, for many New Yorkers, is what makes it so special.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I love getting breakfast here, they have French toast and you can get it with fruit which I love. They also have lots of burger options for lunch. Typically fast service unless they're swamped (it's only 2 or 3 guys doing everything but they do it well!) An essential neighborhood fixture. Keep in mind, this is not a sit down restaurant!! Takeout only, cash only!
June 09 · Ashley-Ann CooperThe memories of this essential "dining pit" are wide as they are precious. Steve the original owner, was an example of a fine and caring human being. Not sure of his current statusn. Memories that won't erase. Art the turn of this century, when Steve can't would feed us at 7am in the morning after we got broke after pulling an all nighter, galloping from one juke 🎶 joint to another, just having a funky good ole time 🥳🥂🍾For nearly 4 decades I've eaten just about every meal on their posted menu from bfast to dinner. This menu is really full. It's nice to see this timeless and lasting food joint on St. Nicholas Ave. next to the 148th street subway entrance still servicing the community. TExas⭐️ burgers & fries were the absolute truth. But, it was all day breakfast platters that keep them in the groove. I ordered French fries: $3,50.I remember when a big order was "a buck fiddy"🤑The french fries are STILL, crunchy outside & hot/fluffy inside 🍟 They keep it simple.Idk ,Jackson Hole, T⭐️, burgers have always been the best 🍔 That's what's UP! Much Respect Steve &Crew. 1LuV🤩🥓Love💕 & Light🕯 to all my peops present & in the next realm 😇
October 17 · Lynn E. Brice (HarlemzFlyGirl)For Breakfast, I bought French Toast and an Omelet. Most bodegas in the area don't make French Toast (a few don't know what French Toast is), so I was fortunate to discover that this place makes French Toast. There isn't much room to eat inside the place, so I think it's mostly take out orders. My food was ready relatively quickly. Approximately 5 minutes and the food itself was fine in a basic way.
January 05 · Teofilo Colon JrThis place was my favorite breakfast spot24 years ago since I was a teen
July 24 · Carel Wadge LLCGreat place, mini diner, fantastic breakfast.Atmosphere? Lol, Google doesn't understand how humans value space, it has the Atmosphere of a traditional lunch counter, which is fantastic for a lunch counter. Come here for food, it's great!
