The Point African Restaurant, located at 885 S Hamilton Rd, Whitehall, OH 43213, presents a unique proposition for locals in Ohio who are keen to explore diverse culinary traditions. For residents in the Columbus area, particularly those in Whitehall, this establishment offers a window into the rich flavors of West African cuisine, providing dishes that might not be readily available elsewhere. The restaurant’s commitment to serving authentic staples like Waakye, Jollof Rice, and various traditional soups, including peanut soup, means that those seeking genuine African flavors can find them right here in their community.
However, it's also important to acknowledge that the dining experience, as highlighted by customer reviews, can be mixed. For instance, some feedback regarding the peanut soup described it as "watery" and lacking in expected consistency or spice, deviating from what might be considered a traditional "thick" peanut soup. Similarly, the Waakye was noted as not being spicy enough for some preferences, despite spiciness being offered as an option. These observations suggest that while the restaurant aims for authenticity, there might be variations in dish preparation or a need to clearly communicate spice levels to meet diverse customer expectations, particularly for those familiar with West African cuisine.
Furthermore, customer interactions, such as the reported difficulty in purchasing an extra rice ball or a staff member's reluctance to engage in conversation, point to areas where customer service could be enhanced to align with the welcoming nature often associated with community dining. While the cleanliness of the establishment and the ambient music were noted positively, the overall dining experience for some was impacted by these service aspects and perceived inconsistencies in food quality. For any local restaurant, fostering a consistently positive customer experience through both food and service is paramount for building a loyal customer base.
Despite these points of feedback, The Point African Restaurant still holds potential as a suitable spot for locals. For those who are adventurous eaters or have a specific craving for African cuisine, it offers dishes that are otherwise difficult to find. It serves as an important cultural touchpoint, providing a taste of home for members of the African diaspora in Ohio, or an educational culinary experience for others. The variety on the menu, featuring numerous popular Ghanaian dishes, ensures that there’s a broad selection to explore. Ultimately, while there are areas for improvement, The Point African Restaurant remains a notable and unique option for the Ohio community seeking to embrace the vibrant flavors and cultural experience of West African dining. Its presence enriches the local food scene by offering a distinct and much-appreciated niche cuisine.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Ordered Rice ball with peanut soup. Husband from Ghana was very excited to try it. The man who took our order(Mark)...we asked if he was also from Ghana (hubby and I are new and he loves connecting with people). The guy said I don't want to talk about it. Okay, first odd thing. Then we asked to pay for/buy 1 extra rice ball to share. He said even if there is a price...we don't have any extra around. He forced us to spend more money for food that 1) We didnt want 2) was not tasty to begin with. That is odd. A restaurant not permitting customers to pay for extra sides. On their menu, today(Tuesday), you can only order 2 of all the items listed.Peanut soup should look thick.. closer to gravy/curry consistency. It was very light and watery, similar to light soup. It was not very spicy at all. Over all the food was not delicious, the service was not excellent....very disappointed. Gave 2 stars because it was clean and the music was okay. Wouldn't recommend, won't be back, and I can make better food at home.
August 22 · Amanda JEAN-LOUISWe tried the Waakye and the peanut soup. The Waakye had good portions, but it wasn’t spicy, even though they offered it as an option. There’s a little shito that comes with it to give it a tinge of spiciness. We were really looking forward to the peanut soup because it was one of the recommended dishes, but it was a letdown. It was watery and didn’t have much flavor other than lamb.
January 01 · AndreThe Point has the best Ghanaian food I have ever eaten. The food was perfectly seasoned and tasted great! The presentation was also professional. I will come again!
November 11 · Faith FolarinTried Ghanaian food for the first time. Waakye was the deal for me. I enjoyed every piece of grain in the food, very delicious and affordable.Good atmosphere, great service and customer relations. Will definitely visit again
