Thelewala Introduce
For anyone craving a truly authentic taste of India without leaving New York City, there's a small but mighty spot that stands out: Thelewala. Nestled in the heart of Greenwich Village, this unassuming eatery has become a go-to destination for locals and tourists alike who are in search of genuine Indian street food. More specifically, Thelewala specializes in the flavors of Calcutta (now Kolkata), bringing the city's famous street-side fare, especially its legendary rolls, right to your plate.
The name "Thelewala" itself is a nod to this heritage, as it translates to "cart vendor" in Hindi, perfectly capturing the essence of the food served here. This isn't your typical sit-down Indian restaurant with a sprawling menu of curries and tandoori dishes. Instead, it’s a focused, high-energy spot that offers quick, delicious, and deeply satisfying food that you'd find from a bustling street stall. The atmosphere is casual and trendy, making it a comfortable place for anyone from a college student looking for a study break to a tourist wanting an authentic culinary experience.
Thelewala's reputation is built on its commitment to traditional flavors and fresh ingredients. The menu, while concise, is expertly crafted to showcase the best of Calcutta's street food culture. From savory and spicy rolls to a variety of chaat, every item is designed to deliver a burst of flavor. This focus on a few key offerings allows the restaurant to perfect each dish, ensuring that the quality remains consistently high.
Its popularity isn't just a result of great food; it’s also about its role in the community. Thelewala has become a regular haunt for college students, given its proximity to several universities, and a known spot for anyone seeking a quick, satisfying meal that won't break the bank. Its status as a great place for solo dining further adds to its appeal, as it's a no-fuss environment where you can grab a bite and go, or just enjoy a moment to yourself with some fantastic food.
Thelewala is conveniently located at 112 MacDougal St, New York, NY 10012, USA. Situated in the vibrant and bustling Greenwich Village, the restaurant is easily accessible from many parts of Manhattan. The neighborhood itself is a destination, known for its historic brownstones, unique shops, and lively atmosphere. This prime location makes Thelewala an ideal stop whether you're exploring the area, heading to a nearby park, or simply commuting through the city.
The restaurant's accessibility is a major plus for New Yorkers. Given its central location, it's a short walk from several subway stations, making it a convenient choice for a quick lunch or a late-night craving. While parking in this part of the city can be challenging, Thelewala's focus on takeout and quick service means that many customers prefer to visit on foot or use public transportation. For those who can’t make it in person, the restaurant also offers delivery services, ensuring that you can enjoy their delicious offerings from the comfort of your own home or office.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Ordered the aloo paneer roll. I ordered it and intending to eat it as a snack/small lunch before catching the subway — it was fantastic. Super tasty with the red onion and I wished I ordered more of them. Would definitely love to come back next time I visit. Fast and efficient service.
August 25 · Brinda PatelPerfect late night eat, but the Chicken Phall Roll is WAY spicier than you think.Honestly, get the other rolls and ask for the Phall Sauce on the side if you want spicy.Other than that, place is small with only about 6 or so seats, but usually empty.
August 18 · Senna ⠀The food is really good, I got pan puri. The workers are super nice and even offered more water if I ran out , beware it is very spicy if you have low spice tolerance lol.
February 21 · AvaRolls are pretty good! I tried the Thelewala roll and the chatapata chicken roll, both were good but I liked the Chatapata chicken roll more. The place doesn’t have much seating, consider it more like a take away place.
August 17 · Aman KalraHad their Chicken Malai Roll - costed about 11$ (in cash). It tasted good, but would not say that it was the best Kolkata kathi roll in New York.Had kathi rolls at the Kathi Roll Company (Bryant Park) and at Chote Miya (Chelsea Market) as well. Would rank the rank the Kathi Roll we had here at the last in terms of taste and price. Felt that it was a little on the pricier side given that the other places price the same item much less but are more flavorful. Nonetheless, it is a good option if you are craving a Kolkata kathi roll and this is the easiest option, then give it a try. It's a small place, so very limited seating space available. Also paying by cash costs a little less than paying by credit card.
