It was decent, but came with raw peanuts — which is a big miss when it comes to authenticity. The satay tofu was overly oily, the fried chicken wings looked more like modern bar fare with a pandan leaf added as a bow tie, rather than the traditional pandan-wrapped Ayam Goreng, and the Mee Siam leaned completely Thai-style (wet), instead of the dry, tangy Malaysian version that’s typical.Overall, the dishes are okay, but they definitely don’t capture the true essence of Malaysian cuisine — that rich Peranakan influence and the deeply layered flavors built over centuries.

West New Malaysia is one of my favourite restaurants in NYC. I've been here more times than I can remember and the food is always delicious, portion sizes huge, and price point unexpectedly low.Almost every time I come I get the combination curry rice, which comes with a large portion of curry chicken and curry beef (over rice). The meats are always delicious - very well cooked to a perfect tenderness and juiciness - and the amount of food is just so big for the ~$12-13 price point.I also really like the indian mee goreng - the noodles are very chewy and I liked the great mix of savoury/sweet flavours in the sauce. The char kway teow has a similar but overall blander flavour. Roti canai is usually yummy as well (the chicken curry is ofc the same as the one on the combo curry plate).Some anti-reqs: the singapore fried rice noodle was not very good. I felt that the noodles were so soft and borderline soggy, and the bland flavour just made it feel like eating pasta at times. I've also tried the kang-kong belacan (water spinach) which was ... fine? But it just tasted a bit overcooked and overly bitter when I had it.Nonetheless, I do tend to stick to the 3 or 4 things I've here that I love, and I'm always extremely happy at the end of my meal -- satiated appetite with loads of leftovers at such a low price. I have to say, I think this place is getting busier with time (finally getting the recognition it deserves), so it's bittersweet when I think about maybe having to wait for table in the future :P

Went with a party of 6 without reservation and got seated within 15 minutes! The service was fast.We got a bunch of dishes, but the highlight was the stingray. SO DELICIOUS. I've never had stingray before, so I was a little intimidated going into it, but it was incredible. Please try it!

We've eaten here twice. Not easy when you visit Chinatown and not end up eating Chinese as one might think. But in reality, there are many Chinese dishes, as well as Indian and Thai dishes, in their menu. This is so as part of the ethnic make-up in Malaysia.Currey Beef Brisket Rice $12.95. Beef was tender and the curry had a lot of depth. Very safe dish. Recommended.Panang Asam Laksa $14.95. This vegetarian dish had a lot of onion and overall too sweet for my liking. Definitely pass.Hokkien Mee $14.95. This is a Chinese dish as Hokkien is a province in China. I've never had this. It's a stir-fried but soupy udon noodle dish with shrimps, squid and pork. Udon was soggy; otherwise okay. Not much character but not bad at all.Capitan Noodle $14.95. This is like a soupy version of Chinese chow fun. Same protein mix as Hokkien Mee. The flat noodle was too soggy, a let down.Indian Mee Goreng $14.95. This is an Indian version of pad Thai but with egg noodle and a bit of spiciness. Good dish. Everything was on point.The exterior is different enough to stand out, with a bit of Western vibe. The interior setup is charming and current. Service was on point. Despite some misses in a few dishes, we plan to come back again. This restaurant feels approachable in terms of ambiance, food choices, and price point.

3 stars for this restaurant, roti and hainanese chicken are the go tos. The stir fry noodle is also pretty good. Mapo tofu is alright, a bit on the sweeter side. But the fried rice and fried calamari is so so. Nothing outstanding with these 2 dishes.
