Japanese restaurant, Yakitori restaurant ★4.0 (198)·$20–30

9 St Marks Pl, New York, NY 10003, USA

4.0
I have been here twice, but I can say that I enjoyed coming here and trying out the dishes. My most recent visit was on the weekends, and I tried the Oh! Taisho w/ Miso Soup and for dessert: Pudding with ice cream. The servers were thoughtful in providing a glass of water before I ordered, checking in to see if I was ready to order, and letting me know there are hooks under the table that I can hang my bag. It also has Japanese music playing in the background. The Oh! Taisho Don tastes fresh, hot and crispy though a little over seasoned, to compensate the flavor, I had Sprite soda to go along with my meal so that helped me to enjoy the meal more, especially the pickled daikon. There is a dessert menu, even though it's not given, you can politely ask for the menu if you'd like to see. I saw on the dessert menu, there are parfaits (100% I want to try it next time). The time I came in, it was during the weekends and, boy was it busy. So if you are coming in as a large group, be considerate of the space especially if you're carrying a huge bag or jacket (depending on where you are being seated). Don't expect it to be quiet, because it can get busy and noisy when the restaurant gets busy.Overall, I do not mind coming by again to try the other dishes at a much calmer time, when I can. - Irene H

Yakitori Taisho Introduce

For decades, Yakitori Taisho has been an undisputed institution on the famously vibrant St. Marks Place in the East Village. This Japanese restaurant is more than just a place to grab a bite; it's a bustling izakaya, a casual pub-style eatery that has become a beloved landmark for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Known for its lively atmosphere, fast service, and, of course, its perfectly grilled yakitori skewers, Yakitori Taisho captures the essence of a genuine Tokyo alleyway eatery right here in the heart of NYC.

The restaurant’s enduring popularity speaks to its consistent quality and unique charm. It’s a place where the air is filled with the tantalizing aroma of grilled meats and the energetic buzz of conversations. Whether you're a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, stepping into Yakitori Taisho feels like a trip to another world. It’s a place that has created countless fond memories for generations of patrons, with its unchanging atmosphere and commitment to delicious, authentic comfort food.

Yakitori Taisho is located at 9 St Marks Pl, New York, NY 10003, right in the center of the East Village's cultural and culinary hub. This address places it just a few steps from some of the neighborhood's most iconic spots. Its location makes it incredibly easy to reach from all over the city. Public transportation is abundant, with a short walk from the Astor Place subway station (6 train) or the 8th Street-NYU station (N, R, W trains).

Due to its popularity and relatively small size, it's worth noting that the restaurant "usually has a wait." This is a testament to its appeal as a go-to spot for groups, college students, and solo diners looking for a lively and authentic experience. The restaurant's coziness and popularity are part of its charm, and the short wait is well worth it for the delicious food and unforgettable atmosphere. For those on the go, the restaurant also offers convenient takeout and delivery options, allowing you to enjoy their famous dishes from the comfort of your home.

Yakitori Taisho offers a wide range of services and a comprehensive menu that goes far beyond just skewers. Their offerings are designed to provide a full and satisfying meal for any occasion.

  • Authentic Yakitori: The core of their menu is, of course, the yakitori. They offer a vast selection of skewers, from classic chicken parts like Yotsumi (chicken chunks) and Teba (chicken wing) to more adventurous choices like Hatsu (chicken heart) and Kimo (chicken liver). They also have a variety of vegetable and seafood skewers, including Shishito peppers, Ebi (shrimp), and Geso (squid legs).

  • Diverse Menu Categories: The menu is extensive and organized into clear sections, including Appetizers, Grilled dishes, Ramen, Soups, and Donburi (rice bowls). This makes it easy to find something for everyone in your party, whether they're in the mood for a light snack or a full meal.

  • Small Plates and Comfort Food: Yakitori Taisho excels at comfort food and small plates, which are perfect for sharing. Options like Agedashi Tofu, Gyoza, Takoyaki, and Okonomiyaki are perfect for a casual, shared dining experience.

  • Late-Night Dining: As a true izakaya, the restaurant serves late-night food, making it a popular choice for a post-bar snack or a late dinner.

  • Bar Service: They offer a great selection of alcoholic beverages, including beer, cocktails, wine, and hard liquor, which perfectly complement the smoky flavors of their grilled dishes. Customers often praise their beer selection.

Yakitori Taisho's reputation is built on several key features that make it a standout destination in a city full of dining options.

  • Lively and Authentic Atmosphere: The restaurant's atmosphere is a major draw. It's described as casual, cozy, and trendy, with a constant buzz of energy. The compact, often noisy space, with Japanese music playing in the background, creates a genuine izakaya experience that feels like you've been transported to Japan.

  • Fast and Thoughtful Service: Despite being a high-traffic restaurant, the service is consistently noted as being fast and attentive. Servers are known to be thoughtful, providing water before you order and offering helpful tips like where to hang your bag, which adds a personal touch to the dining experience.

  • Affordable Prices: The menu offers excellent value, with many skewers and small plates being very reasonably priced. This makes it an attractive option for college students, groups, and those looking for a delicious meal that won't break the bank.

  • Variety of Entrees: Beyond the signature yakitori, the menu features a wide selection of other dishes that are equally celebrated, such as the Oh! Taisho Don, Classic Tonkotsu Ramen, and various curry dishes. This variety ensures that there is always something new to try.

What is worth choosing at Yakitori Taisho? The answer is simple: the experience as a whole. While the yakitori is the main event and a definite must-try—especially the Tsukune (beef meatball), Kawa (chicken skin), and any of the set combinations—the rest of the menu is equally compelling. The Oh! Taisho Don, for example, is a rich and flavorful rice bowl that has a reputation for being both delicious and incredibly satisfying. For those who enjoy a bit of heat, the Kimchi Yaki Udon offers a fantastic blend of savory and spicy flavors.

Beyond the food, choosing Yakitori Taisho means choosing a slice of New York history. For over 18 years, as one customer shared, the atmosphere, food quality, and overall vibe have remained consistently great. This longevity in a city where restaurants come and go is a powerful testament to its appeal. The restaurant is not just about a meal; it's about a memory. It's the kind of place where you can create new traditions or revisit old ones, a place that feels like a constant in a city of constant change. The lively, noisy environment, while perhaps not for a quiet, intimate dinner, is exactly what makes it a perfect spot for groups and social outings. The friendly and efficient service, despite the bustling crowd, ensures that you feel taken care of. It's a true New York experience, from the busy street outside to the cozy, energetic dining room within. For anyone seeking a flavorful, fun, and authentic Japanese izakaya experience, Yakitori Taisho is the definitive choice.
