burger joint Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In a city filled with countless dining options, Burger Joint holds a special and almost mythical status. Tucked away behind a nondescript red curtain in the lobby of a high-end Midtown Manhattan hotel (now the Thompson Central Park New York), this no-frills establishment is a well-loved secret that has been a local favorite for years. The charm of Burger Joint lies in its stark contrast to its surroundings. While the hotel lobby is sleek and elegant, the restaurant itself is a small, dimly lit, and chaotic space with wood-paneled walls covered in graffiti and posters. This quirky, "divey" atmosphere is not a flaw, but rather a key part of its appeal, creating a cozy and authentic vibe that feels worlds away from the city's usual polished dining scene.
Burger Joint is a celebration of the simple, classic American hamburger. Its philosophy is straightforward: focus on doing one thing exceptionally well. The menu is intentionally limited, offering a small selection of burgers, a few sides, and a handful of beverages. This lack of complexity allows them to perfect their craft, resulting in burgers that are consistently juicy, flavorful, and made to order. Despite its unassuming appearance, the quality of the food is top-notch, earning it a reputation as a must-visit spot for burger lovers. The restaurant caters to a diverse crowd, including tourists who have discovered its hidden location, college students, and local professionals. It's an ideal spot for a quick lunch, a satisfying dinner, or a late-night bite, and it’s a true slice of New York's unique culinary culture.
Location and Accessibility
Finding Burger Joint is part of the fun. It is located at 119 W 56th St, New York, NY 10019, USA, hidden within the lobby of the Thompson Central Park New York hotel. The entrance is notoriously discreet; you have to look for a small neon burger sign and a red velvet curtain near the check-in desk. This "hidden gem" quality is a huge part of its mystique and charm. Its location in Midtown West places it in a prime spot, just steps away from some of the city's most famous attractions, including Carnegie Hall, Central Park, and the Theatre District. This makes it a perfect stop for a meal before a show or after a day of sightseeing.
In terms of accessibility, the restaurant is well-equipped to handle a wide range of patrons. It features a wheelchair-accessible entrance, ensuring that everyone can discover this hidden spot. The restaurant's service options, including delivery, takeout, and dine-in, provide great flexibility. The small, counter-service layout means that there's usually a wait, but the fast service helps to keep the line moving. The casual, cozy atmosphere is welcoming to all, from solo diners to families and groups. Its central location and convenient access to multiple subway lines (including the N, R, W, F, E, and C trains) make it an easy destination to get to, provided you know where to look. The overall experience of finding this secret spot and then enjoying a great meal in its unique setting is what makes Burger Joint a truly memorable New York institution.

What is worth choosing
The menu at Burger Joint is a masterclass in simplicity, and what is worth choosing is a straightforward decision: the cheeseburger. This is the dish that has made the restaurant a legend and is consistently praised by customers. As one reviewer noted, the cheeseburger with "the works" (lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayonnaise, mustard, and ketchup) is an absolute standout. The beef patty is juicy, perfectly cooked to your preference (a medium-rare is recommended for the best flavor), and packed with a rich, savory taste. The bun is soft yet sturdy enough to hold up to the juicy patty and all the fixings, ensuring a satisfying and mess-free experience. The focus here is on the quality of the ingredients and the perfect execution of a classic, rather than on complex toppings or gimmicks.
While the burger is the star of the show, the sides are also worth your attention. The French Fries, described by a customer as "slightly better" than those from a popular fast-food chain, are a perfect accompaniment. They are thin, crispy, and served in a paper bag, adding to the no-frills, classic feel. The Spicy Cold Slaw is another great option, offering a tangy and crunchy contrast to the rich burger. For a sweet treat, the milkshakes are a popular choice. The Oreo Milkshake, in particular, is a creamy and indulgent dessert that provides a perfect end to the meal. Beyond the food, the experience itself is what makes Burger Joint truly special. The quirky decor, the casual atmosphere, and the feeling of being in on a well-kept secret all contribute to a dining experience that is both unique and memorable. As one customer review perfectly put it, "No frills, just perfect execution." That statement perfectly encapsulates the appeal of this iconic New York eatery, making it an essential stop for anyone who appreciates a great burger served with a side of authentic urban charm.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1It's probably the best cheeseburger with the works +BBQ sauce I've had! Medium rare was perfect. It had great flavor. The buns were soft yet held up even though the burger was very juicy. Bag of fries made the meal complete. I will definitely eat here when I come back.
July 08 · Rick TracyYou’ve found it! This place is so good! Bit hard to find, as there are not any signs on the street or inside the hotel. When you walk inside One One 9, look to the right and you’ll see stairs with red curtains… (see photo)The staff is extremely friendly. The burgers are simply perfect. No frills, just perfect execution. The fries may remind you of a popular golden arched establishment, but slightly better! Bring your marker to write on the walls and enjoy!
June 29 · Kissell Law GroupGreat burger place, with a cool atmosphere and incredibly delicious food. The service is friendly and fast, and the burgers are to die for! The fries and milkshake are very good, too. The price is quite high, but 100% worth it, both for the deliciousness and the experience. Highly recommended!
June 02 · GiusiA hidden gem! Not your typical burger joint. The entrance is all theatre. Classic graffiti walls add to the vibe.Burgers are really good. This place gets busy very quickly and seating can be an issue.Reasonably priced for NY.Must try!
August 06 · Mark AnneseThe burger was good but nothing spectacular that the hype would warrant (lines out the door in the weekend). The prices seem way too high and have increased 50% and $2.25 to add each topping (like jalapeños etc) seems quite a bit too much considering other $26 burgers such as the one at Emily’s which is leaps and bounds better.Otherwise great atmosphere ands nice folks. The best thing I heard was an employee saying the quiet part out loud which was “I’ve never seen an $8 rice crispy, that’s wild”Again, tasty burger and food and nice people and cool vibe but the prices are a large deterrent and don’t correspond to quality in this case
