Established in 1978, this restaurant has built a loyal following by delivering on its promise of fresh, high-quality Japanese cuisine in a cozy and unpretentious setting. Located in the heart of Greenwich Village, Japonica offers an extensive menu that goes far beyond the typical sushi joint, including a variety of appetizers, soups, teriyaki dishes, tempura, and more. This breadth of options ensures that there is something for every palate, whether you're a sushi connoisseur or simply in the mood for some classic Japanese comfort food.
Japonica's longevity is a testament to its consistent delivery of great food and a welcoming atmosphere. While some recent reviews have pointed to a shift in service and food quality, the restaurant's reputation for having a wide selection of fresh fish and a dedicated team of sushi chefs remains a strong draw. The dining experience is designed to be a blend of traditional Japanese hospitality and casual New York efficiency. The a la carte sushi and sashimi menus offer a fantastic range of options, from common favorites to more exotic selections, while the kitchen menu features hearty entrées and traditional Japanese stews. This blend of classic and creative dishes makes Japonica an intriguing destination for those looking to explore the depths of Japanese culinary tradition.

---Choosing Japonica is about opting for a long-standing New York institution with a deep commitment to Japanese cuisine. While some recent reviews mention feeling a bit underwhelmed or that the food is "nothing exceptional," the restaurant's long-standing reputation and extensive menu are a huge part of its appeal. One review mentioned the "Sunrise & Sunset roll" as a favorite, and another from a decade ago praised the "Spicy Scallop Roll" and "BBQ Dragon Roll." The variety and creativity of their maki rolls, as well as the a la carte sushi, are key reasons to visit. They have a "huge turnover" of fish, which means the sashimi and sushi are incredibly fresh, and the portion sizes are noted as being quite generous, which is a great value in a city known for its high prices.
The strength of Japonica lies in its ability to offer a comprehensive Japanese dining experience that caters to all tastes, whether you want raw fish, cooked dishes, or vegetarian options. The "fast service" is a major plus, making it a practical choice for a quick lunch or dinner. While some diners may find the experience "just okay," the fact that it has been a local landmark since 1978 speaks volumes about its enduring appeal. The restaurant is a classic, offering a reliable and comforting dining experience without the high price tag or fuss of more trendy establishments. For a New Yorker who appreciates a vast menu, fresh ingredients, and a casual yet cozy atmosphere, Japonica is a solid and dependable choice for a satisfying Japanese meal. The fact that it's a place where you can find unexpected choices like "quail eggs with ikura" and a huge variety of traditional dishes shows a dedication to authentic Japanese dining that is hard to find.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1for a place that has been around since 1978, I expected better. the service felt rushed even though there were only 2 other tables being serviced besides ours.my favorite was the sunrise & sunset roll. prices are reasonable but the sushi is nothing exceptional.I had a glass of sauvignon blanc that was very flat. I don’t recommend the wine.overall, it was underwhelming and just okay.
July 30 · Vivian RizoDid this place change ownership. The renovation is beautiful, but the food, wow, so mediocre. Why is there no vinegar in the sushi? Its like they set the rice cooker to sushi mode, but forgot to mix in sushi vinegar. The rice was so hard and bland. Fortunately the fish was decent. Wegmans has better sushi in the grab and go area.
May 17 · Ricky LeeOverpriced and not very good. Ramen: Chashu is just boiled pork tenderloin. Egg hard boiled and not marinated. Broth part
June 15 · Harry KaufmanI’ve been going to japonica for decades. It is a neighborhood staple. Fantastic food, lovely staff, and good prices for the location and amount of food you get. If you want to know what New York was like — the food, the people — before it got taken over by influencers, go to japonica. And if you have any dietary restrictions, especially if you are vegetarian, this is a fantastic place to go. They have a lot of options on the menu, and for everything else wait staff will take care of you there.
June 24 · Maximilian SchreckThis was our first time coming to Japonica and it was a mother's day lunch/dinner for 4. The seating was intimate, the service was excellent & the food perfect. There are seasonal options and regular favorites when you think of sushi/sashimi. This location is ideal for small groups (2-6) or if you're on your own. From appetizers to dessert, we were absolutely pleased. I look forward to returning.
