Oyamel Introduce
Introduction / Overview
In a city as culturally rich as New York, the arrival of a new culinary destination is always cause for excitement. Oyamel, by celebrated Chef José Andrés, has brought the vibrant spirit of Mexico City's street festivals to the heart of Hudson Yards. This restaurant is more than a place to eat; it is a sensory experience that combines authentic Mexican cuisine with a lively, joyful ambiance. The name "Oyamel" is a nod to the sacred fir trees that serve as a home for the Monarch butterflies in Mexico, a cultural detail that reflects the deep respect for Mexican heritage found throughout the restaurant's menu and design. This is the second location for Oyamel, which has been a beloved institution in Washington, D.C. for decades, and its new home in New York promises to bring the same level of excellence and energy to the city's dining scene.
Oyamel is a celebration of Mexico's rich regional diversity, focusing on a menu of "antojitos"—Mexican small plates—as well as ceviches, tacos, and signature dishes. The approach is designed for sharing, allowing diners to explore a wide range of flavors and textures in one sitting. The liveliness of the dining room, with its colorful, energetic decor and lush greenery, matches the creativity of the menu and the cocktail list. Chef Andrés and his team are dedicated to using authentic ingredients and traditional techniques, from house-made heirloom corn tortillas to slow-cooked meats and fresh seafood. The restaurant has quickly established itself as a go-to for those seeking not just a meal, but a fiesta. It's a place where you can feel the warmth and joy of a Mexican street fair, making it a perfect spot for both a casual bite or a special occasion.

What is worth choosing
For New Yorkers seeking a Mexican dining experience that goes beyond the ordinary, Oyamel is an outstanding choice. The most compelling reason to visit is the sheer quality and authenticity of the cuisine. The menu is not a generic Tex-Mex offering; it's a genuine exploration of Mexican flavors. The freshly made guacamole is a must-order, celebrated for its solid presentation and taste. The "Aguachile de Camaron," with its perfect lime juice flavor, is another testament to the restaurant's dedication to fresh and balanced tastes. The tacos, made with heirloom Mexican corn tortillas, are praised as "good finger food" and are offered at a reasonable price, especially during the express lunch. Another standout is the Caesar salad, a classic from Tijuana, which is prepared with sliced anchovies and grounded croutons for a truly authentic taste.
Beyond the food, the overall dining experience at Oyamel is what truly sets it apart. The ambiance is lively and joyful, creating a festive atmosphere perfect for groups or a celebratory dinner. The attentive service, as noted by a reviewer who experienced quick correction of a mistake, is a significant part of the positive experience. The cocktail program, with its unique and delicious options like the "Salt Air Margarita" and the "Pineapple Habanero," provides the perfect complement to the food. While some may find certain cocktails too sour for their taste, the variety ensures there is something for everyone. The value offered during events like NYC Restaurant Week, with full-size portions of popular dishes, also makes it an excellent choice for those looking for a high-quality meal at a great price. Oyamel is a place that successfully combines the warmth of Mexican hospitality with the culinary creativity of a world-renowned chef, making it a truly worthwhile and memorable destination in New York's competitive dining landscape.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Everybody orders freshly made guacamole. We had great camaron ceviche. Nice lime juice taste. Presentation solid with ice below metal plate.Caesar salad excellent. Sliced anchovies, grounded croutons. Classic large romaine cut alike Tijuana.Taco cheaper per item pricing. Good finger food.Margaritas, choices. We ordered pineapple whereas too sour for our tastebud. Not salty good. Foams fancy.Service great. Quick to correct mistakes.
July 29 · Sam HahnHad dinner at Oyamel during NYC restaurant week. The $45 special menu was incredible. Full-size portions of some of the tastiest aguachile, tacos, and tortillas I’ve had in a while. By the time the tacos were brought to our table, I wasn’t even sure if I could keep eating. Everything tasted fresh and the ambiance was lively and joyful on a Wednesday afternoon. Would recommend.
August 01 · dhairaWe loved our meal here. At first I was a bit disappointed to see the diner had disappeared but this is a fantastic replacement. The service was top notch. The food was wonderful, gorgeously presented and so tasty. Highly recommend and I can't wait to go back.
June 19 · Lora WileyThis is a fantastic, relatively new Mexican restaurant and bar. I'm happy to have stopped in. The aesthetic is wonderful. Junior was a delightful bartender. He was very attentive, and knowledgeable about the food and drink options. I highly recommend the margarita selection with some street tacos. All flavors seem to have been thoughtfully balanced. Another win for Chef Andrés.
June 24 · D MFabulous service, really attentive and friendly staff from Anna, Nico and Shane. The fresh guacamole station is an awesome addition and it's great to see it being made to order. They also have a fabulous fresh fish bar.We tried several of the tacos, don't be scared of the tripe and trotters, it's closer to a warming stew style filling and very deep flavours. All tacos had a surprising depth of flavour and warmth - a very original and pleasingly refreshing recipe. The pineapple is a brilliant showstopper of a dessert - served as a quarter pineapple on a bed of ice, fresh with the hints of lime and tequila. You can see it from the Highline and that's what drew us in, I'd recommend it as a top pit stop for any Highline walkers or as an intentional destination - the restaurant may be newly opened, but the service was five star with extremely attentive and helpful staff.Would highly recommend to anyone visiting NYC, and will be returning with our friends when were back.
