SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa has long been a celebrated name in the world of premium, high-quality sushi. With its arrival on the Upper West Side, this acclaimed restaurant has brought its unique and thoughtful dining concept to one of New York City's most vibrant neighborhoods. More than just a place to eat, SUGARFISH offers a distinct experience centered around the philosophy of Chef Kazunori Nozawa, who is dedicated to serving fish in its purest, most perfect form. The restaurant is renowned for its "Trust Me" menus—curated, multi-course meals that showcase the day's best fish, eliminating the need for extensive a la carte ordering. This approach simplifies the dining process and allows guests to fully trust the expertise of the chefs.
The atmosphere at the Upper West Side location is a standout feature. It’s described as being the largest and most beautifully decorated of the New York branches, with a design that is both cozy and trendy. The space is thoughtfully laid out to create a serene and enjoyable dining environment, perfect for a casual lunch, a relaxed dinner, or a meal for a solo diner. The commitment to fast service is another hallmark of the SUGARFISH brand, ensuring that even during busy times, the wait for food is minimal. The staff is efficient and knowledgeable, adding to the seamless experience.
SUGARFISH is a place for sushi purists and newcomers alike. The quality of the fish is consistently praised as being incredibly fresh, while the signature warm rice, served slightly loose and at the perfect temperature, is a key element of their philosophy. This dedication to serving sushi in a very specific, traditional way sets SUGARFISH apart from other sushi restaurants. The menu, while focused, provides enough variety to satisfy a range of tastes, from classic tuna and salmon to specialty items and hand rolls that are still crunchy when they arrive at your table. It’s a truly premium experience delivered in a non-traditional, casual setting, making it an ideal choice for anyone on the Upper West Side seeking an exceptional meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I love Sugarfish and am soooo happy they are finally in the UWS, I’ve probably been to almost all of their locations and this one is nestled on the perfect street - since they don’t take reservations there are plenty of things to do nearby if there’s a wait. The sushi is always fresh with rice that’s the perfect temperature and hand rolls that are still crunchy when you get them.
February 17 · Stephanie DeDeckerI have now dined at the Sugarfish Midtown East, Midtown West, and the Upper West Side locations. While the food is the same and outstanding at all three places, the Upper West Side establishment is by far my favorite spot of the three as it is the largest and most beautifully decorated. This location has become our new go-to spot for Japanese cuisine and a great time out!
September 13 · A RThe nigirl fish slices are too small and the rice is not tightly packed. You should be able to pick up the the nigiri, invert it, and dip in in the soy sauce.Instead you try to pick it up and the rice falls apart, no matter if you use chopsticks or your hands. So I just take the fish off the rice, dip it, then try to keep it together before it falls apart. This is why trained sushi chefs are a thing and not just assembly line kitchen staff assembling food.Too much strong yuzu sauce on the masked any nuance of the actual food. This places caters to a certain demographic. I clearly am not it.
August 14 · Loh PhatTruly a phenomenal experience every time! We’ve been coming to this sugarfish every month for the past 2 years and the food, as always, is phenomenal. But what makes this location so special is the hospitality. They deserve the recognition. Thank you to our waitress Mia for making our night extra special!
June 02 · Megan MellonSo lucky to have this location so close to me. Sugarfish is one of my favorite sushi chains and their set menu & tip policy make it so easy and relaxed. The food, ambience and service was excellent. Lambo took care of us tonight and he was wonderful. What I love about this location is how intimate, moody and dim it was. The space is cozy and it wasn’t busy, just lively enough. My one complaint is the kitchen. The waiters leave the kitchen through the door that is a very prevalent part of the restaurant, and every time they do, it swings open to reveal very bright white lights that really disturb the vibe and it honestly did bother me. I think there could be a way to rearrange things to make the brightness less distracting.Other than that, everything was perfect. Huge thanks to Lambo for taking an extra step to make our dinner even better, and I’ll definitely be back soon.
