Sushi restaurant ★4.0 (120)·$100+

1372 York Ave, New York, NY 10021, USA

4.0
This was the worst sushi experience I’ve ever had. The rice was entirely unsuitable for sushi – it lacked the light, fluffy texture and didn’t gently fall apart in the mouth. Instead, it was dense, sticky, and felt more like a large lump of rice or mochi. Despite using good-quality fish, the sushi itself was tasteless and poorly made, far worse than even grocery store sushi. The sushi chef seemed inexperienced in traditional omakase preparation. I was particularly surprised by how the sushi was presented without any thought or care for direction, something I’ve never seen at an omakase restaurant before. Additionally, hygiene was concerning, as the chef used the same gloved hands to handle sushi and touch various items around the kitchen. It made for a very unpleasant experience, to the point where I wanted to leave halfway through. While the fish itself was decent, the poor execution of the sushi overshadowed everything else. Considering the restaurant’s previously strong reputation, it’s clear that something has changed – likely a shift in management or ownership. Unfortunately, this once-celebrated establishment no longer meets its past standards. - J K

Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar Introduce

Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar is a unique culinary destination on New York City's Upper East Side, offering an intimate and highly focused sushi experience. In a city saturated with Japanese restaurants, Tanoshi distinguishes itself by specializing in omakase, a traditional dining style where the chef presents a series of dishes, trusting their expertise to guide the meal. The essence of Tanoshi is its dedication to the art of sushi without the distractions of an overly ornate setting. The atmosphere is described as casual, cozy, and trendy, creating a relaxed environment where the sole focus is on the food. This is a place for true sushi connoisseurs who appreciate the subtleties of high-quality fish and a direct, no-frills approach to the dining experience. Tanoshi is a popular spot for lunch and dinner, catering to both solo diners and groups seeking a special meal. Its reputation is built on the promise of a memorable culinary journey, with a strong emphasis on the freshness and quality of the ingredients.

Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar is conveniently located at 1372 York Ave, New York, NY 10021, USA. Its position on the Upper East Side makes it a accessible destination for both local residents and visitors exploring this elegant neighborhood. The restaurant's address on York Avenue places it within a vibrant, yet intimate, part of the city. While street parking is available, it is paid, which is a common occurrence in Manhattan. For those relying on public transportation, the restaurant is well-served by various bus routes, making it a viable option for those coming from different parts of the city.

Accessibility is also a key consideration at Tanoshi. The restaurant features a wheelchair accessible entrance and wheelchair accessible seating, demonstrating its commitment to being an inclusive dining space for all guests. Its location within a predominantly residential area allows it to serve as a convenient and special dining option for the community. The intimate setting, combined with these accessibility features, makes Tanoshi a thoughtful choice for a personalized and enjoyable dining experience.

Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar's service model is highly specialized, revolving around the omakase experience, which requires a unique approach to reservations and dining.

  • Service Options: Tanoshi offers dine-in service with a seating-based system. Given its small and intimate setting, this approach ensures a focused and personal experience. Takeout and delivery options are also available for those who wish to enjoy the food in a different setting, though the omakase experience is best appreciated in person. The dining room has a limited number of seats, which is why reservations are so critical.

  • Dining Options: Tanoshi serves both lunch and dinner. For lunch, there are four scheduled seatings from Monday to Saturday at 11:30am, 12:15pm, 1:00pm, and 1:45pm. Dinner service runs from Monday to Saturday with three seatings at 6:00pm, 7:30pm, and 9:00pm. On Sundays, dinner seatings are at 5:30pm, 7:00pm, and 8:30pm. This structured schedule is designed to ensure a smooth and personalized omakase experience for every guest.

  • Reservations: Reservations are required for the omakase dining experience. The restaurant strongly recommends making dinner reservations in advance, as the limited seating fills up quickly. This planning ensures that guests have a guaranteed spot for their special meal.

  • Offerings: The menu includes a variety of options beyond omakase, such as a selection of appetizers including Miso Soup and Karaage, sushi rolls, bento boxes, and donburi bowls. They also offer a range of beverages, including alcohol, beer, hard liquor, and wine. The focus is on healthy options and small plates, which are perfect for a personalized dining experience.

  • Amenities: The restaurant provides a restroom for guest convenience. For payments, they accept credit and debit cards, offering a simple checkout process.

Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar is known for several key highlights that make it a distinctive and memorable dining spot in New York City.

  • Specialized Omakase Experience: The main draw of Tanoshi is its omakase-only dining model. This allows the chefs to focus on creating a series of expertly crafted, high-quality pieces of sushi. This dedicated approach ensures that the "sole focus was on the food itself," as noted by one customer, which is a rare and valued experience for sushi lovers.

  • BYOB Policy: The "bring your own bottle" policy is a significant highlight. It provides guests with the freedom to pair their own favorite sake or wine with the exquisite sushi, enhancing the personalized nature of the meal. This is a unique and cost-effective feature that many diners appreciate.

  • High-Quality Fish: Despite some critiques about the preparation, the quality of the fish itself is consistently noted as "good-quality" and "decent." The restaurant's focus is on sourcing excellent ingredients to ensure the best possible flavor and texture.

  • Relaxed and Intimate Atmosphere: The environment is described as "very relaxed," contrasting with the often rigid and formal atmosphere of traditional omakase restaurants. This casual, cozy, and trendy vibe makes it approachable for a wider audience, creating a comfortable space to enjoy an elevated culinary experience.

  • Consistent Praise from Patrons: Positive reviews, such as the one stating "Every piece was a delicacy," highlight the restaurant's ability to deliver a truly wonderful dining experience. While some past reviews may point to a change in management, a positive review about the high quality of the food and the overall experience is still publicly available.

What is worth choosing at Tanoshi Sushi Sake Bar? The main reason to choose this restaurant is for its specialized and unique approach to dining. Unlike a typical sushi restaurant with an extensive menu, Tanoshi offers a focused omakase experience. This is a deliberate choice that allows the chefs to showcase the freshest and highest-quality ingredients in a series of carefully curated dishes. For those who love sushi and want to explore it in a new way, the omakase is the definitive choice.

The "Omakase Lite" and "Omakase Deluxe" options are a great way to experience this. A positive review highlights that the meal was a "delicacy," and that the focus on the food itself, rather than extraneous decoration, was a major plus. This makes Tanoshi an excellent option for serious foodies who appreciate substance over style. Additionally, the BYOB policy is a huge draw, as it allows you to bring your own special bottle of sake or wine, making the experience more personal and potentially more affordable than ordering from a restaurant's wine list. The availability of other a la carte items, such as the various bento boxes and donburi bowls, also means that even if you aren't interested in the full omakase experience, you can still enjoy a delicious and satisfying meal. The casual yet trendy atmosphere also makes it a great spot for a relaxed dinner without the stuffiness that can sometimes accompany high-end sushi. While some reviews suggest a potential decline in standards, the overall concept and the fact that positive experiences are still available make it a worthy choice for a unique and memorable meal in New York City.
