Ernesto's is a true standout in New York City's culinary landscape, and what makes it truly worth choosing is the remarkable combination of authentic, high-quality Spanish cuisine and genuinely warm, top-tier hospitality. While some restaurants focus solely on the food, Ernesto's creates a complete experience that leaves a lasting impression.
The menu is a highlight, offering a delicious journey through the flavors of Spain, particularly the Basque region. The "Para Picar" and "Entradas" sections, with dishes like the classic Croquetas and the delightful Pintxo Matrimonio al Ajillo, are consistently praised and often recommended as the best way to experience the menu. As one diner noted, the smaller bites are "the best options," perfect for sharing and enjoying with a glass of wine. The larger main courses, while sometimes a point of debate among critics, are still part of a well-rounded and traditional menu.
However, what truly elevates Ernesto's is the service. The staff, from the chefs to the servers and the beverage director, are knowledgeable, passionate, and incredibly attentive. A customer's review highlights this perfectly, stating, "I was cranky when I came in and left extremely happy. Delicious food, great vibe, and exceptional hospitality." This level of care and personal attention makes every guest feel valued, transforming a simple dinner into a memorable occasion. The staff's expertise in guiding diners through the extensive Spanish wine list is also a major draw.
The atmosphere is another key reason to choose Ernesto's. It's a place that feels both romantic and lively, offering a different vibe depending on where you sit. The opportunity to dine at the chef's counter provides an up-close look at the culinary process, while the cozy smaller dining room offers a more intimate setting. For those seeking a social and vibrant scene, the bar area and the outdoor seating provide the perfect backdrop. For a dining experience that feels both genuinely Spanish and distinctly New York, Ernesto's is a top choice, promising great food, fantastic drinks, and a level of hospitality that is second to none.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Sat at the Chef’s counter in the smaller dining room. Very large and interesting wine menu with lots of Spanish wines! Love the smaller bites, I think the traditional options to start such as the tortilla, croquetas, and jamón are the best options over the mains. I would definitely come back to sit outside and enjoy some wine and smaller bites!
June 14 · Maria YuLong time fan but finally visited for the first time on my birthday. The staff was amazing and made for a really really fun dining experience, especially our server Matt and (please forgive me for not remembering) our beverage director who helped us pick out some lovely wine.I was cranky when I came in and left extremely happy.Delicious food, great vibe, and exceptional hospitality. I’ll be back for it all very soon.
February 23 · Matthew Roulan- Suckling pig meat is a little dry tbh.- Tapas is ok but overpriced compared to same level of Spanish restaurant in town.- Many bugs if you eat at the outdoor patio. I have to wave the whole night to keep the bugs away.- Waiters seem unhappy or tired from the face looking.
June 21 · sOur friends insisted on taking us here while my husband and I visited the city this past weekend. We usually don't frequent places like this; they're too trendy, usually too loud, and the decor is all the same. Track lighting in the kitchen, along with tables that are too close together, and a server with RBF? Dime a dozen. Despite this, I went with an open mind (pinkie promise, I did), and I still left disappointed. The food was alright, some of it was really good, but it was dampened by the mid service. Our table didn't feel very welcomed by our server nor did we feel like we had an exceptional experience overall. If a restaurant charges this much for such small plates, I expect top-tier service. Who's in charge here? And more importantly, why are they okay with guests leaving feeling like they’re just another check to clear?
August 19 · Brett CarterWe sat at the Chef’s Counter overlooking the back kitchen and had one of our better meals in recent memory. Super friendly, attentive staff with good knowledge of the menu. We started with cocktails, which were a step above the usual manhattan fare and designed to fit within the food menu. We started with the jamon croquettes that had a light, crispy batter and enjoyed the crab tarts as a compliment from the kitchen — a must get when we return. The Bikini Hemingway is simple yet refined with a perfect balance of sweet and savory and hits you with a perfect balance of textures. The Galician octopus is reminiscent of a classic pulperia in basque. The sauce work on the cannelloni was sublime, but the pasta was a bit under for my liking — only critique on an otherwise amazing meal. Nice dessert selection too!
